HISTORY
WHERE DOES THE BRIDGESTONE NAME COME FROM? The Bridgestone Tyre Co Ltd was established in 1931. Founder Shojiro Ishibashi was already a successful businessman, and passenger vehicles were growing in popularity. With knowledge of the rubber business, Ishibashi realised the potential for providing tyres for this new mode of transportation, so he started a tyre company. Ishibashi used an English translation of his surname, literally ‘stone bridge’, to create the Bridgestone brand.
WHO RUNS THE COMPANY NOW? The company is now run by the Bridgestone Corporation, which has its head offi ce in Tokyo, Japan. In total, there are 188 plants in 25 nations. The company’s culture and mission remains rooted in the words of founder Shojiro Ishibashi, who said Bridgestone is dedicated to “serving society with superior quality”.
WHERE DOES BRIDGESTONE RANK AMONG THE MAJOR PLAYERS? In 1988, Bridgestone acquired The Firestone Tyre & Rubber Company, which transformed Bridgestone into the world's largest tyre and rubber companies, which it remains to this day.
