BRIDGESTONE | SIDECUT REPAIR

6. APPLY PATCH

Take a template in the size of the selected patch and mark the position of the patch inside the tyre. Auxiliary lines across the centre of the damage may help to centre the patch unit later on. Templates are given on the back of each package of patches and can be cut out from the carton box. Buff the marked area within the chalk lines smoothly to achieve a surface of the RMA 3 texture standard. Clean the buffed area with a wire brush and a vacuum cleaner and apply the blue Special Cement BL evenly and with a good coat to the surface, release the tyre spreader and turn the damage to a 3- or 9- o’ clock position and let the cement dry. After sufficient drying turn the tyre back to the correct working position and check the drying by using the knuckle test. Loosen the patch backing paper but place it back again to protect

the bonding layer. Align the patch correctly inside the tyre and remove the backing paper slowly from the center first and press the patch onto the contact area. Finally, stitch from the center, working outwards until the whole of the patch area is stitched, to avoid air traps under the patch. You may record any required data on the white fields of the patch label by using a marking pen. Finally, apply Innerliner Sealer to the patch border area and any buffed-over area of the inner liner. Now that the repair is finished, you may carry out some cosmetic work by buffing the outside of the repair and putting some tyre paint all around the sidewall if necessary. Do not put the tyre back into service before the chemical curing of the patch is finished! This may take up to 24 hours if only an ambient temperature of 18°C / 65°F is available.
