FILLING TYRES WITH NITROGEN


Nitrogen is a safe alternative to compressed air for inflating tyres. Real Answers looks at the many benefits of switching to this gas


WHAT IS NITROGEN? Nitrogen is a gas that makes up 78% of the air that we breathe. Nitrogen is an inactive gas, which means it is less likely to react with other materials in tyre than compressed air.


WHY USE NITROGEN INSTEAD OF COMPRESSED AIR? The main benefits of using nitrogen are slower loss of pressure, cooler run and reduced chances of corrosion for the rims and steel wires of tyre. Nitrogen molecules are bigger than oxygen molecules, it is harder for them to escape from the tyre, meaning that the tyre stays inflated at the right pressure for longer. It is estimated that such losses happen six times quicker with air rather than nitrogen. it helps in minimizing the risk of irregular wear due to low pressure. Because nitrogen is a pure gas, it does not


retain heat and so the tyres also run cooler, which means they will also last longer.


NITROGEN


Compressed air contains moisture, but this is not the case with nitrogen filled tyre. This means that oxidization does not occur if you use nitrogen, so the tyres and rims will not be corroded from the inside and can last longer.


IS IT SAFE? Yes. Nitrogen has been used for many years for aircraft tyres. Because planes fly at high altitudes, the temperatures can drop well below zero, which would cause any moisture inside tyre air to freeze. This could cause problems on landing so nitrogen is used as it does not contain any moisture. Nitrogen has also been used for racing cars to improve


performance as there is less difference in temperature, and therefore pressure, when the tyres are pushed to their limits.


HOW DO I SWITCH TO NITROGEN? Your supplier will remove all of the air from your tyres and then inflate them with pure nitro gen. The tyres would then need to be topped-up with nitrogen.
