I remember feeling completely ec- static when a friend of mine told me he was going to introduce me to the vocally talented, inspira- tional, and lively Tender Mavundla. I mean, anyone who watched the nail-biting Season 4 of South Af- rican Idols in 2007 will recall how Tender, a young woman with an ef- fervescent personality, working in a stationery shop in Port Shepstone, a town situated 100 odd kilometres from the bustling city of Durban in South Africa’s Kwazulu-Natal prov-


ince, easily and effortlessly sailed through every round of the South African version of this internation- ally acclaimed musical talent show to reach the Top 10.


This was a mean feat for a girl who had grown up in a little village called KwaNositha, also in Kwazu- lu-Natal province. During her high school years, Tender was actively involved in stage plays and even joined a gospel choir. In 1997 she won the South African Broadcast-

Tender then moved to the cosmopolitan city of Johannesburg where she worked as a waitress and sang backing vocals for various artists.
