MANY motorists passing through the popular touristic vil- lage of Godshill may be unaware of its history and charm; for the best way to explore the village is on foot. Te 14th century church in its outstanding hilltop location offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, whilst the ancient cot- tages clustered around Church Hill epitomise the traditional English village. Te Parish has greatly benefited from having the Manor of Appuldurcombe within its boundaries, for the Worsley family, and later the Yarborough’s, contributed gen- erously to the decoration and fittings in the church as well as funding the construction of the Primary School in 1826.
Advertising: Call (01983) 861 007 Te beauties of Godshill have been appreciated and por-
trayed by numerous artists over the last two centuries, includ- ing Tomas Rowlandson and Charles Tomkins in the 1790s. Tomkins returned in 1809 to paint a detailed watercolour of the village as part of a commission of 58 drawings for Earl Yarborough (Figure 1). Additionally, the Island artist and en- graver, George Brannon, recognised the charm of Godshill and produced a fine copper plate engraving of the village for his publication ‘Vectis Scenery’ in 1829, whilst in the mid- 19th century the watercolourist William Gray painted a deli- cate view of the village.
