fashion & beauty - It’s time to invest in your smile
Dentures in a glass beside the bed and a bathroom cabinet filled with fixatives and cleaners. More than 11 million Brits - a million of them below the age of 40 - wear some kind of false teeth.
LIVING without gnashers can be an embarrassing, tiring and confidence-sapping experience. Dental implants could provide the answer to those dreams of a beautiful new you. Apart from looking and fitting better than conventional dentures, they could actually prolong life. Implants allow you to chew your food and absorb more from it, so you can expect better nutrition. Tey also reduce the risk of gum disease and can help improve speech. A sparkling new smile could also lead to a more sexy, more
attractive and more successful you. According to one study nine out of 10 people notice and remember someone’s smile when they meet them for the first time. St James Clinic in Newport is dedicated to helping patients
look and feel their very best for life. Tis private practise pro- vides a complete range of Cosmetic, Restorative and Implant Dentistry. Teir team of in-house dentists and specialists are also joined by visiting experts. Te surgery surrounding dental implants, while not new, is not well known in this country. It involves a small titanium screw being fitted directly into the bone to form a false root. Tis means the whole structure is supported by the jaw
bone, which grows around the base of the screw within weeks. Despite sounding particularly brutal, most patients report very little or no pain during or after the procedure. A porcelain tooth, or several teeth, can then be permanently
fixed to each one. Tis allows most people to feel that they are identical to natural teeth in appearance and function. Te treatment can be performed in a day but more likely implants take several months. Full mouth reconstruction can take up to a year. Wilhelm Grotepass, a specialist dentist at St James Clinic, believes the treatment should be considered by anyone who loses teeth. He says: “Te first thing to say is that this is not a new or experimental treatment, it has been around for almost 50 years. “It is a great option for people who have lost teeth and feel self-conscious about it. “Dentures sit on the soft tissues of the gums and after a
period of time this changes the shape of the face. “In older people the jaws shrink and face can appear to
collapse. But the benefit of implants is that they stop this happening. “Tey also last a lifetime, whereas bridgework, an- other alternative for a missing tooth has an average life-span of between 10 and 15 years.” Wilhelm, goes on: “One of my patients who has had a lot of

work done has been accused by her friends of having had a face-lift. “She has assured them that she is looking younger because she has had work on her teeth, but they simply don’t believe her.” As well as the medical benefits of implants, patients often

enjoy a psychological boost as well. Wilhelm reveals. “Because the teeth are mechanically secure, people who have been wearing dentures are able to regain confidence. “A loose tooth or a loose denture may see them avoiding social engagements especially where food is involved. “People who feel self-conscious about their smile develop habits such as throwing their hands up in front of their faces when they laugh. “But they stop doing that because they feel comfortable with how they look.” Chewing efficiency with implants is about 90 per cent com-
pared with 30-40 per cent for dentures. Wilhem says: “Te benefit of using dental implants means there is less wobbling of teeth and this improves chewability. “In people missing just one or two adjacent teeth, the implant allows the bridging tooth to be fitted without af- fecting the teeth on either side. “Implants are also ideal for those people missing a lot of teeth - either an older person or younger person with destructive gum disease. “Traditional bridges anchor to teeth on either side of the missing tooth a bit like a terraced house, and good teeth need to be pared down to facilitate this. “Te beauty of implants is that they are independent of
adjacent teeth - more like a detached house.” Wilhelm admits implants are transforming the practice of dentistry and that it is wonderful for people who receive them. He adds: “Although it is not in the textbooks, the loss of teeth is a blow to the self esteem of an individual - a daily reminder of loss. “Dental implants can help you regain your confidence, health and appearance.”
