July 2011 after which a shortlist will be drawn up and those selected invited to give a short presentation to a dis- tinguished judging panel at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on 6th


October 2011. This year’s judges include ASHRAE


President Ron Jarnagin; CIBSE President Andy Ford; and IMechE president Roderick Smith. Following the judging Mr Jarnagin will deliver the annual ASHRAE Lecture to the UK industry and there will be an evening reception hosted by CIBSE Young Engineers’ Network.

onserve Limited, which launched the Drainwave™


in-line flushing device at Ecobuild in February, is an innovative device


that collects waste water from building use (basins, washing machines, showers) and combines this with water from the toilet to increase the flush volume down sewage pipes. The Drainwave™ stores the water temporarily and once it has reached a predetermined capac- ity (9.5 litres) automatically tips, which sends the water surging through the pipes. The device is stored under- ground near the building and contains only one moving part, so it requires little or no maintenance. Investigations have shown that con-


cerns regarding reduced WC flush volume and sewer solid movement were justified. A significant reduction in WC flush volumes, for example to a 4½ and 3 litre dual flush combination, is likely to be unacceptable if no other measures are taken to counter the effect of the reduced flush. The flush or washdown volume is 10 litres (or more) with a velocity greater than that induced by WC’s.
