Following a rigorous and all encom- passing review of their occupational health and safety management systems and arrangements, the HSE have granted Deconstruct (UK) Limited with a 3 year licence to work with asbestos. The HSE were satisfied that the deconstruction and demolition specialist demonstrated the necessary knowledge, experience and compe- tence and as a result were awarded with the maximum licence period granted by the HSE to safely remove asbestos and undertake all aspects of asbestos management.

ISG Jackson has added four new awards to its growing collection of industry accolades in 2011, achieving recognition for the quality of its proj- ects by the Suffolk Association of Architects and Local Authority Building Control Officers. At the Suffolk Association of Architects Awards, ISG Jackson secured a Craftsmanship Award for its £65 million Suffolk One development and also shared a Design Award with architect Barefoot & Gilles for its multiple award-winning Clump Field housing scheme in Ipswich. The Leadbitter Group’s exceptional performance in being considerate to the communities in which it works was recognised with an outstanding fourteen Considerate Constructors Scheme awards this year, including two gold, three silver and nine bronze. But the crowning achievement for the company was its affordable rural housing development in Great Somerford, built on behalf of The Guinness Trust, being named a runner- up for the top CCS award of Most Considerate Site, one of only 22 sites in the UK, which were nominated for the award.

Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios has recently completed the new Discovery Centre for the Jodrell Bank Observatory. Designed for the University of Manchester’s Centre for Astrophysics the projects include two new Visitor and Exhibition Pavilions, which have been built to inspire budding young scientists and showcase cutting-edge research ‘as it happens’. Located directly adjacent to the Grade I listed Lovell Telescope, the design of the buildings are inspired by this historic landmark and its setting in the sur- rounding landscape.

Rockwool has opened a green field production facility in the Gujarat province in India. The facility’s main purpose is to supply the fast growing process manufacturing industry in India and some of its neighbouring countries with hi-tech insulation products for technical installations, such as hot pipes, boilers and tanks. The new €22.7 million factory is located in Dahej on the West coast of the Gujarat State and has the capacity to produce 30,000 tonnes of Rockwool insulation products per year. When in full production, the factory will employ up to 200 people. It was inaugurated by Shri Narenda Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Protean Design has been commis- sioned to design and develop a quality walling system for John Lewis’ flagship store in Cardiff. Colin Hibbs, managing director of Protean Design, said: “All ele- ments of the Lite system provided for the flagship store have been designed to meet its seasonal needs, allowing for an environmentally superior, more cost- effective solution than the construction previously used. It was essential that the system could be easily reconfigured by staff for re-use, without compromise on quality. We are delighted to provide the store with a sustainable solution that meets all their needs.”

The 2011 Best Young Construction Professionals were announced on May at the annual Construction Development Alliance (CDA) confer- ence. Winners Andrew Ashworth, Wayne Cronshaw, Kyle Fallows, Mark Hughes and Donna Parfitt received the industry recognition awards at St Mary’s Chambers in Rawtenstall. The ceremony attracted more than 130 construction industry professionals, who came together to celebrate the achievements of the brightest young talents across a range of categories. Sir David Trippier, former MP for Rossendale and former Minister for Construction, hosted the awards pres- entation and praised the winners and nominees for their accomplishments and contributions to the industry. High Pressure The BBA has awarded an Agrement Certificate to FunderMax GmbH. This Certificate relates to Max Exterior Cladding Panels, high pressure lami- nated panels fixed onto a timber or aluminum support frame for use in back ventilated and drained cladding systems. The support frame and its fixing to the substrate wall are outside the scope of this certificate.
