Kerakoll wins award for Best Environmental Initiative Kerakoll’s Green Building Rating and Eco Products range have been recognised as the best environmental initiative in the tiling industry at the Tile Association Awards for 2011. The company has developed the Green Building rating in the absence of a single European assessment system to give a benchmark for the design and construction of eco-friendly buildings. It is an objective evalu-

ation method which provides a rating from 0 (unfriendly) to 5 (low environmental impact and eco-friendly) allowing architects and contractors to easily assess the environmental impact of any product. Kerakoll has redeveloped its products to be as eco-friendly as possible and has instigated a process of continuous assessment and improvement. Products in the Eco range are formulated to use fewer natural resources and reduce the impact of building on the environment.

Lafarge masters sustainability Lafarge Cement has completed the national roll out of a lower carbon version of its popular all-purpose cement Mastercrete, providing its customers throughout the UK with a product that will help to achieve environmental targets. Mastercrete is one of Lafarge Cement’s principal products in its packed cement portfolio and offers end users a multipurpose material that is ideal for concreting, rendering, brick and blocklaying and screeding. Mastercrete was historically a CEMI cement, however in recent years Lafarge Cement has invested in the production of a lower carbon, CEMII Mastercrete at its factories. CEMII

Mastercrete dramatically reduces the need for clinker in the manufacturing process and produces approximately 15% less CO2 during production.

NIBE heats Peak District barn out of thin air A huge stone built barn situated near Holmfirth in a countryside full of steep slopes and wooded defiles, was built in 1683 to store grain and hay, and shelter livestock from the harsh Peak District win- ters. It was converted into seven dwellings in 1997, one of which has been made into a beautiful and spacious home with only one major problem, the cost of heating.

The owner called in Warmway of Dewsbury, expert in renewable energy methods and a registered NIBE VIP installer. Being MCS registered, Warmway were able to access Government funded grants and were therefore able to design a system that is affordable and ecologically sound as well as extremely fuel efficient.

Think inside the box!

Nu-Heat specified Environ’s acoustic enclosure for a 12kW Hitachi Yutaki air source heat pump installation in Kent where the homeowner wanted to ensure there was no noise implication for neighbours. The enclosure can reduce noise levels by 25 – 27dB(A) bringing it to under 25dB(A) in most cases. Additionally, it keeps the heat pump secure and safe from vandalism and offers protection from any particularly harsh weather conditions. The colour and finish of the enclosure can be specified to help the installation blend in with the surroundings and garden decor. The real time assembly is approximately an hour.

Bona products approved by DIBt

A range of Bona products has been granted DIBt approval. The DIBt (DeutschesInstitutfürBautechnik) is the approvals body for safe construction stan- dards and indoor air quality in Germany. Since January 2011 in Germany, all wood floors and products used for their installation, such as adhesives and surface treat- ments, have to be approved by theDIBt. The new legislation is based on the EU’s Building Construction Directive and is the industry’s toughest specification yet over the use of safe chemicals, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and aldehydes emissions. DIBt has approved all Bona products submitted to date including waterborne lacquers, Traffic, Mega and Novia, as well as the company’s entire range of reactive adhesives. With this new legislation, Germany is the first country in the EU that enforces the “ER3” criteria from the Building Construction Directive that are designed to ensure the use of safe chemicals and to decrease indoor air pollution. At the same time it underlines the importance of the health and comfort of the people who will eventually use the floor, marking the start of a new era in European legislation that puts the floor owner and consumer in focus.
