Rossendale

The rugged and dramatic scenery has attracted film-makers over the years and various towns within the Rossendale valley were used for filming scenes of the BBC TV series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates during the 1990s. The 1980 drama Juliet Bravo was filmed in Rossendale. During Autumn 2008 areas around Rossendale were used in the filming of the BBC TV series Survivors, including the Airtours site and other sites in Helmshore and Bank St, in Rawtenstall. The popular comedy series, The League of Gentlemen is apparently based upon Rossendale (and perhaps Bacup in particular), playing upon stereotypes and exaggerations of the area. Subsequently, the producers filmed in various northern towns, one of which was Bacup itself.

With the steady decline of the cotton industry Rossendale suffered from serious economic decline which has only recently halted. However, the opening of fast road connections with Manchester, allied to the attractiveness of the local countryside has meant that Rossendale has developed a sizeable commuter population, and the area is seeing a remarkable economic revival.

Local Radio Celebrates First Anniversary. Rossendale Radio commenced official broadcasting on 1 May 2010 following a three year period which saw the group apply and obtain a community radio licence from Ofcom and apply for funding from numerous sources. The radio station broadcasts on 104.7FM to Haslingden, Rawtenstall, Ramsbottom and surrounding areas and online at www.rossendaleradio.co.uk. Unlike commercial radio, Rossendale Radio is a not for profit Community Interest Company relying on a combination of public funding and commercial revenue, and is mainly staffed on a voluntary basis. The radio station is based at the erstwhile Agapao Impact Centre in Haslingden. Ofcom awarded a community radio licence to "Rossendale Radio CIC" and will run for least five years. Rossendale Radio has a weekly programme on behalf of the Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale Council for Voluntary Service which gives representatives of local voluntary, faith and community sector organisations the chance of much-needed publicity. The station has a varied music policy trying to cater for all tastes and information, guests, interviews, local news and sport also feature extensively on the radio station. Happy Birthday.
