TALES FROM THE HARDWARE STORE Wow, the last few weeks have most certainly been busy in The Hardware Store! This is good news indeed as March had been unusually quiet, but with the outstanding weather given the time of year, we have seen many more people out shopping and enjoying the sunshine! And the sunshine definitely makes people happier! Talking of happiness, my favourite customer comment of the month was made by John from Briercliffe, who on the day we were contemplating the reasons for the massive increase in the use of anti-depressants, said ‘you never hear people whistling in the street anymore. I’m sure more people would feel a lot better if they did’. Do you know, the more I thought about this, the more I realised it was so true. So, if you were once a whistler but don’t bother anymore, get back in the habit. See how many smiles you can raise! We’re counting on you. Apart from the shop being busy there has been so much else going on in Padiham. We’ve got a ‘new kid in town’. I’m referring to Curtis….the totally adorable black Labrador, Guide Dog puppy whom you may have seen in the arms of Les, who will be his master for the first year or so of his life. After that he will leave Padiham and move on to the Guide Dog Training School. By the time you’re reading this he will have had all his injections and will be able to walk and sniff around, rather than be carried. Les’s role is to provide a loving, home for Curtis, and get him used to going into shops and meeting people. Les has looked after several Guide Dog puppies over the years. I think you will agree all puppies are gorgeous but when you think of the responsibility which lies ahead for Curtis, it’s actually quite breathtaking. I’ll keep you updated on his progress and will try and get a photo taken so that Herald readers outside of Padiham can have a peep at this gorgeous chap. We’ve now got a Guide Dog collection box on our counter so all unwanted change will be donated to this very worthy cause. Whilst Curtis was quietly settling in with his new family in Padiham, there was major excitement when it was announced that we had a local Lottery Winner! Yes, Anthony Young’s life was changed forever when he won over £2m on the National Lottery. People do feel quite proud when something like this happens locally, and there was genuine concern at how difficult it must be to handle being suddenly catapulted into the limelight. It was a real talking point for several days when the news broke and, without exception, everyone I spoke to was thrilled to bits for him and wished him a wonderful, wonderful life. Finally, I was wondering how much electricity has been saved by the occupants of Burnley, Padiham & Clitheroe since the dry sunny weather has enabled us to ‘peg out’, rather than use the dryer? Does anyone have any idea? Until the next time… Carol Broadbelt Ps – just heard that Bolton beaten 5-0 at Wembley. Ooops
