CAPTAIN’S COLUMN IAN SHARPS

It was a disappointing result against Southend United on Saturday but if we are honest with ourselves it was probably a fair result in the end and that is the disappointment. I thought we did alright in the first half but alright isn’t good enough and if we want to achieve things this season then we have to improve on Saturday’s performance. What we didn’t do on Saturday was play with enough quality at times, the quality into the front men, the front men holding it up, the wide men getting the ball into the right areas, the defence keeping the opposition out, it wasn’t just one thing or one position not doing things right but all of us not playing to the levels that we know we can. The result means we’ve dropped a few places in the table but the only team that can affect that position is ourselves. We need to look to the next game and to getting the three points in this evening’s game.

Hereford didn’t have the best of starts to the season but over the recent weeks they have started to pick things up a little. If you look at their teamsheet then they have a nice looking squad on paper and I’m surprised to see them where they are. It is a derby game and form tends to go out of the window and it’s like a cup game, but we will have to pick our performance up from Saturday if we are to get anything from the game. I am sure we can improve and I know the lads are ready for it and want to get those three points. It is only three points up for grabs but I think it means that much more to the fans and hopefully we can show them how much it means to us. We then have the disappointment of a free weekend, and it’s important that we go into that break on the positive of a win. It is a long time to the next game and we want to give everyone that little boost.
