TONIGHT’S VISITORS HEREFORD UNITED – PREVIEW
Although the Bulls remain second from bottom, there have been signs of progress since physio Jamie Pitman assumed temporary charge after Simon Davey’s short spell at the helm came to an end. Davey had only been appointed in the close season after
Graham Turner ended his long spell at Edgar Street. Leaving United too were Darren Jones, Keith Lowe, Matt Done, Edrissa Sonko, Craig Jones, Leon Constantine, Lee Morris, Chris Adamson, Joel Edwards, Marc Pugh and Gavin McCallum. Joining the club were goalkeeper Dan Connor from
St.Patricks Athletic, whilst in defence, Michael Townsend moved from Cheltenham, Janos Kovacs signed from Luton. Samba Kanoute joined from Auxerrre and O’Neil Thompson signed on loan from Barnsley, although the last two of these players has left the club. In midfield, Daniel Stratford came from Inverness, whilst Joe Colbeck arrived from Oldham and Zac Evans switched from Cardiff City. The attack was boosted by Charlton’s Stuart Fleetwood, Notts County’s Sean Canham, Amodou Ranihou of Austria Lustenau, Sam Malson from Icelandic side Prottur and Swansea City’s Guillem Bauza. With the season underway, Darlington defender Dominik Werling and ex Coalville keeper Rhett Heister signed for the club, whilst defender Tony James returned to the club on loan from Burton Albion, later followed by midfielders Rob Purdie and Nicky Featherstone from Oldham and Hull respectively.
This season began with a win, as Kovacs netted the only goal in a 1-0 win at Crewe, but they fell to a 3-0 home defeat by Colchester in the Carling Cup. A 0-0 draw was collected at home to Gillingham, but the trip to Chesterfield brought a 4-0 loss ahead of a 1-0 home defeat to Rotherham at the end of August. September brought just one point from five league games as a 3-0 loss at Burton was followed by a 2-0 home defeat to Oxford. Bauza put them ahead at Bury, though, and they were only denied a win by a stoppage time leveller in the 1-1 draw. However, heavy home losses followed to Southend (1-3) and Stevenage (1-4). A 2-0 defeat at Barnet left the Bulls three points adrift at the foot of the table, and saw Davey depart the club. Pitman assumed temporary charge ahead of the 3-0 home Trophy defeat to Exeter, but Canham earnt a point in the 1-1 home draw with Port Vale, and United staged a thrilling comeback from a 3-0 half time deficit to win 4-3 at Northampton through a Fleetwood double, and contributions from James McQuilkin and Mathieu Manset. Manset also scored in the 1-1 home draw with Accrington, and again in the 5-0 win at Stockport, alongside Purdie’s brace, another Fleetwood effort and an own goal. Fittingly, this took them off the foot of the table. Richard Rose and Colbeck netted in the 2-2 home draw with Aldershot, whilst Kent League side Hythe were defeated 5-1 in the FA Cup, as Manset claimed two, with Rose, Purdie and Fleetwood also on target. In the league, Manset scored in the 1-1 home draw with Cheltenham.

Last season opened with a 2-2 draw at Morecambe, ahead of an upset in a 1-0 extra time Carling Cup home win over Charlton, before a 1-1 home draw with Cheltenham. A 3-1 home defeat to Bury followed ahead of a 1-0 loss at Crewe. League Cup hopes ended with a 4-1 reverse at Portsmouth, and the opening month came to an end with a 2-2 home draw with Port Vale. September was more encouraging, as United progressed in the Trophy with a penalties victory at home to Bristol Rovers, before a 2- 2 draw at Aldershot. The wait for a win continued after a 1-0 loss at Grimsby, but ended as Accrington were beaten 2-0 at Edgar Street. A 4-1 defeat at Rochdale was next, but was followed a 2-0 home success over AFC Bournemouth, which brought a rise to 18th spot. A 1-1 home draw with Dagenham opened October, and Trophy involvement continued with another victory at home on penalties, against Aldershot, ahead of a 1-1 draw at Rotherham, and 1-0 home win over Chesterfield. Although a 1-0 loss was suffered at Bradford City, the unbeaten home record continued in the 2-1 home win over Darlington. November began with a 2-0 home win over Sutton, whilst Hereford claimed their third penalties Trophy success in a row at Leyton Orient. A 0-0 draw was claimed at Barnet before a 3-2 loss at Burton. Shrewsbury were defeated 2-1, but the undefeated run at Edgar Street ended with a loss to Colchester in the FA Cup. However, an impressive 3-1 win at Northampton was the first away league success of the campaign.
Four straight defeats brought a drift back towards the relegation zone, though. A 2-0 home defeat to Notts County was followed by a 3-1 reverse at Macclesfield. Trophy involvement was ended by Milton Keynes, and 2009 ended with a 1-0 loss at Torquay. In the early weeks of 2010, came a 1-1 home draw with Crewe, a 1-0 defeat at Bury and 2-0 reverse at Port Vale as United slipped to 21st place. However, two home wins in February, against Lincoln and Torquay corrected this slump, and though a 3-1 loss at Shrewsbury followed, a 2-0 home win came against Aldershot. The bright spell ended with reverses at home to Burton (3-4) and Northampton (0-2) before a 5-0 crushing at Notts County. March opened with a 1-0 win at Cheltenham, but a 2-1 home loss to Macclesfield saw Trewick replaced as manager by Turner. Subsequent losses followed at Lincoln (1-3) and at home to Morecambe (0-1), but Bradford were beaten 2- 0, ahead of a fine 2-1 win at Chesterfield. The good form continued with a 2-1 home success over Barnet, and a 1-0 victory at Darlington, but ended with a 1-0 home loss to Grimsby and 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth. However, safety was assured by a 2-1 win at Accrington, and the season was rounded off by home win against Rochdale and Rotherham either side of a loss at Dagenham.
