STAFF FILE

So what does your job broadly involve? I run the hospitality in full capacity, from the sales team to the reception desk, the kitchen, I oversee all departments. So I make sure that all the systems are in place and that everything runs smoothly.

So quite busy then? Yes, it has a great responsibility, when it comes to the books, it has to be right and we have to show some profitability.

GEORGE PAPADOPOULOS

Staff file is the part of the programme where you get to know the people who work at Shrewsbury Town. The back room people who we don't think about as we celebrate or commiserate, the people who make our Saturdays possible. This issue, George Papadopoulos our hospitality general manager, took some time out to talk to me.

Were you a Shrewsbury Town or a football supporter before you came to the club? I wasn't but I certainly am now. I've been following Shrewsbury for the last three years, since I started helping the previous hospitality manager in the new ground.

And of course being from Greece, you will have enjoyed their Euro victory a few years back? Of course you tend to remember when your side has done particularly well, but that was exceptional. Nobody was expecting that to happen, so it was a really nice thing to happen.

How did you end up at Shrewsbury Town? Well, my background is hospitality with football clubs I worked Aston Villa, Derby at the Ricoh Arena, a number of places like Wolverhampton, Birmingham City. The chairman approached me when the club needed some support, and I came in and we had a chat, and I was very glad that he wanted me to work here. No doubt in my mind that I like working here.

And what do you find yourself doing most of the time? My main focus is a customer focus, and passing that care on to the guys that work at front of house. So a customer focus is my main objective, quality and value for money is what we offer here, and we like to keep it that way.

What do you consider as the best part of the job? Within hospitality, every day there is something different, no one day is ever the same. We have a range of different people as customers and we like to go the extra mile for them, and give a good service.

What tells you when you have done a good job? Obviously when there are no complaints, no news is good news, as they say. It's nice to see customers coming in, having a good day and making a comment about how wonderful the staff have been, or how welcomed they felt on the premises. We like it when we have looked after people better than other places that they have been to, some of the calls and emails that we get from customers show us exactly that, and it is a pat on the back for us.

All that remains is to thank George for taking the time to answer my questions, if you would like to see George at work, bookings for Christmas in the restaurant are still being taken, see ShrewsWeb for details.
