MANAGER’S NOTES GRAHAM TURNER

Welcome to tonight’s match against our local rivals Hereford United and in particular a warm welcome to all those who have made the journey up the A49. Whilst we as managers will always say it is just another match with three points at stake and nothing more significant than that, competing against former clubs is built up, mostly by outsiders, as something more than just three points. I spent fifteen years at Edgar Street, mostly in the dual role as chairman and manager, I still consider it a foolish thing to have bought the majority shareholding in Hereford United, I was never the owner nor did I ever claim to be, however the period as chairman was an education in itself.

With little knowledge of the football business and ably supported by my vice-chairman

Joan Fennessy, we turned a desperate situation into a club with a future. Most of our time in the early days was spent sorting out a real financial mess, we left behind a club having £1/2 million in the bank, grants available to help fund a new stand and a long term lease negotiated with the council which confirmed their commitment to the club. After our own efforts at Edgar Street it is sad to see them struggling, however there is only one thing on my mind tonight and that is to take the three points from the game. The local derby element will nullify our respective league positions therefore I expect the encounter to be as tough as it could be. Last Saturday saw us drop two points against Southend, having taken the lead we allowed them to take control of the ball and paid the price for dropping off our tempo. Having said that when they were gambling on getting the equaliser by throwing men forward we should have picked them off on the counter attack. We had sufficient opportunities to have killed them off with a second goal; however we failed to make the most of those opportunities. Grinding out results is one of the phrases used by managers occasionally, something which is vital in the course of the season. We all know that we are not going to play free flowing, attacking football all the time and that standards of play fall below everyone’s expectations, in these games the phrase becomes true. At the end of the season the teams who grind out the one nil-ers are the ones who are ultimately promoted. Injuries also play a part in the clubs destiny and we have recently had more than our fair share of problems however the picture is now looking a lot better, with more of the players now fit again with our position looking a lot better. The transfer window closes in five weeks from this Thursday; if it is at all possible we will be looking to bring another player in. If we don’t succeed with that it will not be for the want of trying.
