PLAYED FOR BOTH
There have been one or two movements between Hereford and Shrewsbury over the years, and I am not talking about the A49. Over the years we have used each other’s playing and management staff, mainly as a result of our close proximity. Off the top of my head I can think of five players who have played for both sides, Ben Smith, Andy Tretton, Lionel Ainsworth, Marc Pugh, Carlton Leonard, and John Brough. There are quite a few more I know, but this week I am going to focus on Marc Pugh. Pugh started his career at Burnley as a youth player, but didn’t make an appearance for them and moved to bury, via a loan move to Kidderminster. Marc played 47 games for Bury in just over a year at Gigg Lane and scored five times from right midfield, before Gary Peters brought him to Shrewsbury. Dubbed a luxury player by some, Pugh definitely showed great ability, but at times was inconsistent and also suffered from a change in management. When Paul Simpson came to the club, it was clear that he didn't feel he could use Marc's skills, despite his nine assists the previous season. Pugh was surplus to requirements and loaned out to Luton, before another loan and then permanent move to Hereford. Pugh went on to prove himself at Hereford in 09/10 with 13 goals and seven assists in 40 odd games, and signed for Bournemouth for a tribunal set fee. He has started well at Bournemouth with seven goals so far and seven assist in less than 20 matches.
ON THIS DAY: 1889 Previously free scoring town play only their sixth competitive game of the season and go down by a 0-4 scoreline to Oldbury in the Birmingham Senior Cup.
1895 Visitors Stourbridge leave Town still looking for their first Birmingham league win of the season after a single goal win. 1907 The two Billy’s – Scarratt and Riddle – share four goals between them as Walsall are defeated 5-3 in the Birmingham league. Jones was our other scorer.
1999 Town suffer a single goal defeat at York City’s Bootham Crescent, the first time in 104 years that Town had failed to find the net on this date.
