SHANE CANSDELL-SHERRIFF
The Shropshire Star’s James Garrison speaks to Shane Cansdell-Sherriff
No sooner had the final whistle sounded to bring Saturdays 1-1 draw with Southend to an end then Shane Cansdell-Sherriff had turned his attention to tonight’s clash with Hereford United. The A49 derby concludes a quickfire home double header for Graham Turners side who will be hoping to celebrate a four point return from the two encounters come 9.45pm tonight. Australian centre half Cansdell-Sherriff is well aware tonight’s encounter against Towns near rivals will be tough. But the former Tranmere man is hoping his side can make up for the disappointment of conceding a late equaliser to Southend at the Greenhous Meadow on Saturday. “Saturday was devastating but we have to move on now and tonight is a massive game,” he said. “We wanted six points from these two home games which could possibly have given us a chance of moving up to top spot in League Two. But even winning tonight would put us right up there so hopefully we can get a big turnout from the crowd and they can help us to what would be three really important points.”
Cansdell-Sherriff is hoping his side have learned the lessons of the weekend after two points slipped through their grasps in the closing stages against Paul Sturrock's side.
A fine Mark Wright volley had put Shrewsbury on course for another home victory against Southend, but that was cancelled out by a well struck Anthony Grant leveller with just three minutes remaining on the clock.
“We just need to learn how to finish a game
off,“ he added. “We had our chances in the first and second half and we didn’t take them. It’s disappointing because it was 1-0 and we should be winning the game.”
“I thought Saturday was going to be a day that once we got the goal, we would score three or four. But it didn’t happen and now we have to try and put that behind us and push on.”
Despite Saturday’s late setback, Shrewsbury remain in an extremely strong position as November draws to a conclusion. And Cansdell- Sherriff is also encouraged by the fact he believes there is plenty of improvement still left in the tank. “We haven’t been at our best at times but we have still managed to get the results and stay up at the top which is a positive. If we get it right and get back to playing how we were early in the season, I think we could dominate the League.” “We keep looking at things and try and change little bits in training and it’s good that the manager is addressing those situations. Hopefully we can soon get back to how we were playing at the start of the season. In a season, you go through these periods where things just don’t fall for you. We need to try and get it all to click at the right times.”
