Mint and Metamark - making murals

The stunning mural transformed a blank expanse of wall.

An investment in the region of a million pounds and over 18 months of applied effort has been made turning a former cinema and bingo hall into a community orientated LIFEcentre close to Bournemouth. Bournemouth Community Church took ownership of the hall in 2009 and has

worked tirelessly to transform the premises into a place that no longer stands empty, but welcomes various uses from the region’s community. Mint Signs and Graphics was asked by the design team managing the creation

of the LIFEcentre, to produce a mural transforming a blank expanse of wall in an otherwise featureless corridor. The job came with some provisos. No wallpaper could be used and the design had to ring colourfully with evocative resonances from the community which the LIFEcentre would ultimately benefit. Mint Signs was handed the design - and the problem of how to execute. The design originated in a world where vector based graphics don’t dictate

cut forms, and so Warren Beard, Mint Signs and Graphics’ owner, had a lot of work to do turning the huge, 30 by 2.5 metre design into something that could be practically cut, weeded and then applied. The next challenge was material selection. The job consisted of myriad colours, contrasts and finishes comprising the whole, each requiring a different material. Help was at hand in the shape of Metamark’s impressively dimensioned Brick. The Brick is packed with hundreds of coloured self adhesive materials,

speciality products and other films. Mint Signs and Graphics used the Brick to specify the materials used to construct the mural from thousands of cut and applied component parts. A combination of Metamark M4, M7 (for a particularly hard-to-find blue) polished and dull metallic films and fluorescent vinyls were used. Five full days of cutting, weeding and applying elements varying in size from little more than a speck, to many metres long then ensued. The result is an engaging work that provides colour and an important identity continuation, brightening an otherwise nondescript area of the building. Work will continue and the design theme Mint Signs and Graphics expertly

delivered, will be mirrored elsewhere. Meanwhile, another of Metamark’s Bricks will soon be landing on Mint’s doorstep to replace the one now used by the LIFEcentre’s design team for specifying other areas of the project.
