It was finally breakfast time, so
we headed down to Frank’s Pizza for a bite to eat. Frank’s used to be the site of the
old school house with lots of local charm, but it burned down, only to rise from the ashes as a sparkling new town gathering venue. It is also the cause of the regular Thursday night traffic jam when “pork wings” are the specialty on the menu (yes, Frank also serves chicken wings), so ya gotta expect a crowd.
If you hit North Augusta in
the afternoon, ask for a “Maynard Special”. It’s a pizza with “nothing red on it” and may or may not put North Augusta on the world’s culinary map. The restaurant itself is still brand
new and, like a new pair of shoes, it’s growing more comfortable with time as more local memorabilia is added to the walls (note the bills over the bar in the back). Yes, the food and
accommodations are great, but again it’s the people who make Frank’s special. Frank, the owner and chief
cook, is a big rumbling guy who is always genuinely glad to see you and may inquire: “Where the hell have you been?” (even on your first visit). Nancy will greet you with a genuinely warm smile as well as your favorite beverage -- without even bothering to ask -- and you
gotta love that. The conversations (shouted
across the tables like at home) were great and the homemade bread made the meal. In short, Frank’s Pizza and North Augusta should definitely be added to your list of locations to visit when touring the back roads. Departing North Augusta, we
traveled east on another wonderful rolling road through Roebuck, then on to the fairytale village of Spencerville (home of Brad Hubbard’s showroom and sometimes private pub); then on to Kars, Manotick and back into Ottawa from whence we came. All too soon our road trip was
over and it was time to get back to other stuff with the knowledge that if ya got the time, we have the back roads just waiting to be discovered, full of new and wonderful people and places.
