come for. The story of a drunk Islay man in
front of the local Sherriff: The Judge says: “You have been
brought here, James MacDonald, for drinking whisky.” To which James replies: “ Okay!
When do we get started?” And, so, if we focus on one malt
in particular, it would be Laphroaig, pronounced La-Froyg. It’s an area of land at the top of Loch Laphroaig, on the South coast. It is probably the most well-known
of all Islay whiskies, and will set you back a few
dollars. The 18-year-old goes for $179, and the 25-year-old will take a mere $629 out of your savings. Laphroaig has been the only whisky
to carry the Royal Warrant of the Prince of Wales. It’s reported the 15-year-old is his favourite. (With his stash, he should be buying the 25-year-old, but who am I to criticize?) Laphroaig is considered one of the most strongly flavoured of all

scotch whiskies, and is most frequently aged to 10 years. In an attempt to recreate the taste of whiskies of old, a “new quarter cask” was introduced. By using smaller casks, and by avoiding chill filtering, the Quarter Cask Single Malt is supposed to taste like its predecessors of 200 years ago. Due to the smaller barrel, the oak surface contact is 30 per cent greater than with standard barrels. Quarter casks were favored in
the 18th century, when smuggling was the norm of the day. These smaller barrels were far easier for mules to carry, a favoured means of transportation. (Who said the Scots were not sensitive to the needs of poor dumb animals?) And so we head back from
Islay, back to the mainland of Scotland -- a wee bit wiser, a wee bit more educated and with an appreciation for the malts of Islay. Until the next time: Slainte.
