As an example, a VIN # could be 6 F 07 A 110196. 6 stands for Model Year: i.e., 1956, 1966. F stands for Assembly Plant (i.e. F stands for Dearborn Michigan). 07 stands for Body Serial Code :body style i.e. Fastback, Coup, etc. A stands for Engine Displacement.(in Ford, “A” stands for 289 w/ 4 barrel). 110196 stands for Consecutive Unit Number (how many cars came off the assembly line ahead of this vehicle).
Matching numbers on a vehicle
show that the frame, body, and motor are original equipment from the factory. Restorers have a common trait,
and that is a passion for perfection in their work. They demand that every piece be exact and when it is complete the final product is often better than the original from the factory with today’s better parts and especially today’s paints. Customizing is considerably
different and is considered “Rolling Art” or “Canvas on Wheels”, where no rules apply.
This was the description given
to me by Bob Johnson of Johnson Welding Works, considered by many to be the best in the customizing business. In the world of “Custom”, cars
are built piece-by-piece and vary by description.“Street Rods” are cars that were built pre-war to 1948. “Sleds” were built from 1949 –1954; and “Street Machines/Pro Street” were typically built from 1960 -1970 with high horse power, two-door North American-built cars that have subtle body modifications: i.e., headlight or grill, roll bars, prostreet suspension
(18” wide rear tires). When building Street Rods (pre-war to 1948), typically a car had a modernized drive train, modernized suspension and brakes, updated electrical from 6 volt to 12 volt, safety glass, and seat belts, making the car both drivable and insurable. “Sleds” (1949 – 1954) are often
“chopped” (lowering of the roof and windshield from 14” to 10” and “channelled” (car body over the frame as opposed to being on the frame). Early 1950 Mercurys were often turned to sleds. The aim in almost all customs is to
have:
o Good stance o Good rake o Stuffed wheel wells.
Good stance means that the
vehicle sits right with the fenders over the wheels. Good rake is when the front of the
car is much lower than the back of the car.
Stuffed wheel wells means that
