Orleans and Rockland Snap Fitness faciltities, figures about 10 to15 per cent of his clients are men over 40. “The men between 40 and 50 who

come in here are generally in good shape,” Beauchamp says. “They’ve made a good habit of coming to work out. Some had never been to a gym before. We show them a few things and next thing you know they’re on their own, doing cardio and weights. I had one guy, about 59, recently come in who was putting on weight because he was retired. He knew he needed to do something.” And the biggest impediment to men

not exercising? “Men tend to be worse than women. The men get used to doing nothing and it’s hard to start over again. But once they accept it, they’re off to a better life.” Mind you, says I, gyms cost money.

The beauty of Jack LaLanne’s message was that even exercising on the living room floor could produce benefits - for free. If you rolled onto the floor and did three (!!!) pushups at each TV commercial break, how many would you have done by the end of the evening? After a week, you’d be shocked at the stark improvement. Not to mention how much cleaner the spot on the carpet would be. Besides, the hardest part of doing

nothing is knowing when you’re through.
