Clitheroe Chamber of Trade was formed in 1923 and has constantly moved with the times and helped develop and protect the companies trading in the town. The 21st Century brought new challenges and the addition of commerce to the title to allow for the changing mix of businesses operating in the town.

Today’s Chamber of Trade and Commerce is about Community, Collaboration and Communication. Their inclusive approach aims to make the most of Clitheroe’s considerable assets by working together to make it an even better place to live, work and shop.

The next door neighbour has just left his wife Florence after forty years of marriage because he found out she was having an affair with the plumber. He simply left her a note which read: “It’s over Flo.”

POLIO NOT JUST A ROTARY PROJECT. When we first started talking about the final push for Polio, we had a speaker at the club who had been on an immunisation trip to India. One of the hand outs on the night was a slip that was headed POLIO SUNDAY it was an advert in India, Sunday being immunisation day. This set me thinking, as a practicing Christian and a regular church attendee, why do we not have a Polio Sunday and carry the message to a wider audience and increase awareness to the wider community. With the club backing I wrote to all the worship places in Clitheroe and district asking them to make 20th February Polio Sunday when they could remember sufferers, supporters, and affected families in their thoughts and prayers. If appropriate they might decide to hold a retiring collection. The response was quite gratifying all the Clitheroe churches responded

positively and four of the village churches. This had an immediate affect in that my own church Trinity Methodist

Clitheroe, have a drama group, and have for a few years done one night for charity. This was at the beginning of February and we received £360 from the group. The vicar of one of our local Anglican churches St Mary’s, on the 27th February is running the parish boundaries for Polio, ( He is not a Rotarian yet!) Both of these churches have already had a collection. It may be a couple of weeks before we get all the monies in but after only three churches we are averaging £100 per church on collections. In a lot of the churches a

Rotarian had the opportunity to talk about the “Thanks for Life” project. If you have fish on the hook you do not let it go, so on the 23rd February we have a shelter box with tent erected at the Castle Gates, and a Thanks for life display . This BIG SOCIETY they keep talking about Clitheroe have been doing it for years.
