READ CRICKET & BOWLING CLUB -
AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY Read Cricket & Bowling Club’s pavilion was opened in 1978 and it shows. It was built for an age when the cricketers were typically in their 20’s & 30’s and almost exclusively male. The only showers are in the gents’ toilet, the kitchen is ok to boil water, make sandwiches and heat pies, but not much more. The committee want to encourage more of the young people of Read, Simonstone and the surrounding villages to play sport in the safe and friendly environment, regardless of age and sex. They want to open the club to more of the community, all year round, and to encourage more people to use the club. The cricket club is at the heart of the community and open to both boys and girls, men and women - whether playing cricket, crown green bowls, or taking part in a school sports day or the Brownie’s playing rounders. Making this a reality needs a major improvement in its changing facilities, with a new changing block and a major facelift to the pavilion.
YOU CAN HELP Estimates put the building of a new block comprising changing rooms, bowling tea room and machine store at as much as £300,000. The club are applying for support from a number of funding bodies, including the ECB but even if successful, they will still need to provide around £75,000 of match funding! So how can you help?
“BUY - A - BRICK” Although a difficult time for many, members and friends of the cricket club, have already started contributing towards the new facilities. Buy-a-Brick is a way in which the whole community can help to achieve something special to benefit our children and the wider community for many years to come. Anyone who buys a Bronze brick for just £10 will receive a purchase certificate. A Silver Brick is £50 and as well as the certificate there is 20% off 2011 Club Membership. A Golden Brick will cost £100 and as well as the certificate, 20% off 2011 Club Membership, your name (either family or individual) will be placed on a commemorative plaque at the entrance to the new building. Anyone buying 5 Gold bricks will get a Life Membership for one person, and of course their name, either family or individual, will be placed on a plaque at the entrance to the new building.
