The Ganaraska Forest Horse Club (GFHC) represents over 100 members with a strong interest for trail riding in the Ganaraska Forest. GFHC has operated for more than a decade and is focused on safe, non- competitive trail-riding. The Ganaraska Forest represents over 11,000 acres of pastoral countryside an hour east of Toronto. Our goal is to work with the Ganaraska Region Con- servation Authority (GRCA) to help maintain the trails, parking lots, signage and amenities. While enjoying the beautiful trails, we also want to help edu- cate all Forest users in safe trail riding and equine awareness. The Club has strong support from a very dedicated Club executive and its many volun- teers!

2010 has shaped up to be a busy year! On January 24 GFHC hosted the annual Family Sleigh ride at Kennedys Maple Sugar bush in Millbrook. The GFHC fundraising dance on March 6 raised funds to support community events and enhance trail riding while working in conjunction with the GRCA.

The Annual General Members Meeting was held on April 18 at the new Ganaraska Forest Cen- ter/Oak Ridge’s Moraine Center. On May 30 the 14th annual “Poker Ride” at the Forest Cen- tre saw our best attendance ever with a total of 94 riders joining in on the fun. A $1000.00 cheque was presented to the GRCA to support the Centre. On June 26, the Summer Sizzler Ride, at the Sandaraska Park, turned into the Summer DRIZ- ZLER with 25 very wet, soggy riders and horses! A camping clinic on July 17 showed riders techniques and safe practices on how to camp with horses. Ron Keeler, horseman extraordinaire, showed the group new knots to practice, along with simple and safe techniques. Members, on August 21, had a chance to prac- tice their highline techniques, ride with friends and enjoy lunch. September 11 was the Skill Challenges Ride with rid- ers heading out on a marked trail of five miles with five designat- ed skill stations. The last sched- uled event for 2010 was our Cool Colours Trail Ride on October 3. Riders enjoyed the
fall colours in the forest which are absolutely breathtaking this time of year! Breakfast, a bon- fire and lots of friends (53 in total!) spent an enjoyable day with their horses. Even though daylight saving time ends short- ly and colder weather is nipping at our heels, all the best to those eager riders who continue trail riding these next few months! In joining GFHC you will receive a number of membership benefits plus opportunities to ride and have fun with fellow equine enthusiasts. Please keep your eyes on the Club website or contact us using this email address. We hope to see you out on the trail!!
