Shorty Leggs Hangs Up His Clown Shoes By Kelly Bowers

Well, it’s a sad sad day for rodeo buffs in Ontario. The elite Dodge Rodeo Tour clown known as Shorty Leggs is retiring from the arena after a long and successful career. The beloved clown will be missed by cowboys, cowgirls, fans, horses, and bulls alike. Ross Millar of Dodge Rodeo says “Everyone will miss Shorty Leggs, otherwise known as Randy McMullen.” Randy started first as a bull rider in Ontario before he went west to Rodeo where he worked for Contractor Bruce Sundstrum while riding Bulls. In his time, he was perhaps one of the most accomplished cow- boys to ever come from Ontario. To this day, he is the only cowboy to ever win bull riding at the St. Tite, Quebec rodeo twice. The first time was at 19 years of age. He eventual- ly retired at 35 but came back in 1998 at the age of 40 to win a Dodge buckle the first year Dodge Rodeo operated in Ontario. He then went to St. Tite and won his second St. Tite Championship and then retired - for good this time. For 13 amazing years, Randy clowned as Shorty Leggs for the Dodge Rodeo Tour. He has always been a popular guy. In 2007, a fan survey named Shorty as the fans

favourite part of the Rodeo. Ross Millar says, “Shorty intends to stay involved in Rodeo but he wants to spend more time with his mother in law…. and do a little duck hunting … in his new Ram Truck.”

A note from Shorty to his rodeo family - “I would like to thank all the people I have meet and work with over my time as your clown. I have every understanding of how I was lucky enough to get the job! It has been one of the high lites of my life I have meet so many great people

“The program’s participa- tion at the Games is exciting on so many levels,” said Susan Stewart Equine Canada Breeds & Industry Division coordinator Export Market Development. “It gives us an opportunity to create awareness of Canadian-bred horses with enthusiasts from around the world, and we can do this by demonstrating in a very tangible way that Canada pro- duces horses that are able to meet the stringent criteria to be selected for a national team. Nineteen Canadian-bred horses were short listed to the Canadi- an Equestrian Team for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Eques- trian Games which is nearly 30 per cent.”

in an application to the Agri- Marketing Program offered by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada well before the funds are granted,” continued Stewart. “It is a cost-sharing program whereby the government match- es dollar-for-dollar the amount of money contributed by indus- try and the goals and outcome are documented and reported back to the government. We wanted to find a way to let our industry stakeholders participate in our efforts in a more interac- tive and timely way. By making updates to the page as we engage in the activities, new ideas are generated, and the experience and findings become much richer and deeper. At the same time, we let those who may be interested in doing trade with Canada’s equine industry gain greater awareness of our strengths and willingness to do business.”

The Facebook page was initially launched to a smaller audience in the spring of 2010, chronicling two of this year’s initiatives that were a part of the Equine Canada Export Market Development Strategy. This included the first installments in a series of seminars that provid- ed horse breeders in Canada with information and insights on how to market horses interna- tionally. The second initiative was an export trade mission to Argentina.

Among the information profiled on the program’s Face- book page is a photo excerpt from a special edition book that was published for the Games, entitled From Meadows to Medals—The Canadian Equine Experience. The 100-page book includes short biographies of the competitors shortlisted to the Canadian Equestrian Team, a listing of all of Canada’s breed associations and the regional programs and organisations that help foster Canada’s mature equine industry. Special features in the book include a review of the unique environment in which Canadian-bred horses are reared and equine health care

and education. It also celebrates the tradition of horse sport and takes a look at both the historic milestones and current programs available in Canada.
