WEG Reining Continued from page 1
McCutcheon, Craig Schmer- sal, Tim McQuay and Shawn Flarida had high hopes of a clean sweep of the individual medals after capturing the Gold in the team competition. Tom McCutcheon per-
formed with his six year old Quarter horse stallion Gunners Special Nite owned by Sarah B. Willeman to a lead score of
228 making it tough to beat. Very pleased with his ride Tom feels he had an advantage by having the horse since he was a yearling “we are able to train him and maintain him the way we want”.
The silver individual medal went to American Craig Schmersal on Mister Montana Nic a 12 year old Quarter horse stallion owned by Erika A. Mister Montana Nic Syndi- cate. “I asked for one hundred
percent and he delivered, for a twelve year old to have him come through for me like that was great” Craig comments. U.S anchor rider Shawn broke a stirrup in the individual com- petition during a flying change maneuver launching him for- ward causing him to touch the saddle with his free hand. The five point penalty incurred combined with the inability to balance well with only one stirrup dropped Shawn to last place in the competition. After an upset of Canadi- an team member Lisa Coulters horse, Western Whiz, not passing the horse inspection, Team Canada finished a respectable 5th overall. Ver- non Sapergia on Its Wimpys Turn, owned by Nickolas Swagor led the team with a score of 211.5. Team member Shawna Sapergia finished eighth in the individual on This Chics on Top also owned by Swagor.
Silver and Bronze team medals went to the European teams Belgium and Italy respectively. Eleven nations competed in this World Eques- trian Games reining champi- onships raising the level of horses and riders across the world. All the North Ameri- can reiners agree that they are going have to step up their game and keep their eyes on the Europeans whom will have the home turf advantage at the next WEG in Normandy, France in 2014.
