SEPTEMBER 2010 THE RIDER /35 Canadian Horse Racing Hall Of Fame


The Canadian Horse Racing’s Class of 2010 was officially inducted into the Hall of Fame last evening, August 19, at the Mississauga Convention Centre. The gala celebrations honoured six horses and four horsemen in the Hall of Fame’s 35th anniversary induction dinner. Heading the list of Thoroughbreds is Victory Gal- lop, the upset winner of the Belmont Stakes in 1998, halting Real Quiet’s bid for the Triple Crown, along with the veteran multiple stakes winner of the 1960s, Victorian Era, and Lady Angela, one of the most influ- ential broodmares in breeding history. She is the dam of Nearctic, the sire of Northern Dancer. Mister Big, the second richest pacer in history, tops the list of Standard- breds entering the hall along with the undefeated trotter, A Worthy Lad, who never lost in 30 races, and the splendid broodmare Classic Wish, dam of Bettors Delight and No Pan Intended.


R. Peter Heffering of Port Perry, Ont., heads the list of people inductees. Heffering owns one of Canada’s leading stallion stations and has owned some of harness racing’s greats, including Precious Bunny. Mel Lawson of Hamilton, Ont., has been involved in both breed- ing and racing a small but successful operation, Jim Dandy Stables, for almost fifty years. His Sovereign Award winners include Eternal Search, Let’s Go Blue and Ginger Gold.

Final Eastern Region Qualifier Held in Young Horse Series


Blainville, Quebec – The fifth and final event in the eastern region of the 2010 Jump Canada Young Horse Series took place during Le Con- cours Hippique de Parc Ete held August 12-15 at the Blainville Equestrian Park in Blainville, QC. Melissa Marcotte and Well Time de Villa d’Arto dominated the Seven and Eight-Year-Old Division. The pair jumped clear in the first round but exceeded the time allowed to finish with one time fault. Owned by Marcotte, Well Time de Villa d’Arto is a seven-year-old chestnut Dutch Warmblood gelding by Indoctro and out of a Voltaire mare.


Felix Antoine-Moulin had one rail down for four faults riding Cormack to place second behind Marcotte and Well Time de Villa d’Arto. Cormack is a seven-year-old bay Swedish Warm- blood mare by Cortess.


Mélissandre Lincourt won the Six-Year-Old Division riding S Class for owner South Shore Farm. A chestnut Dutch Warmblood mare, S Class is by Mermus R and out of an Indoctro mare. The pair jumped clear in both rounds, but incurred three time faults in the jump-off. Taking second position was Milestone rid- den by John Kersley for owner Sandra Babich. Milestone is a grey selle francais gelding by Elan de la Cour and out of a Quito de Baussy mare. The pair jumped clear in the first round and incurred eight faults in the jump-off. The Five-Year-Old Division was won by Dynamo, a bay Canadian Warmblood gelding owned and ridden by Véronique Alary of Rock- land, ON. Dynamo is by Dr. Pepper and out of a Singular Joter dam. Alary and Dynamo were the only horse-rider combination to jump clear in the first round.

Christine Boisseau of Carignan, QC, guided E.T.I. Leonardo to second place with a first round score of four faults. E.T.I. Leonardo is a bay Canadian Sport Horse stallion bred by Phil and Annelise Monnier. E.T.I. Leonardo is by Lestroy and out of a Galisco van de Helle dam. The top-placed pair in the Four-Year-Old Division was Keith Reid and Giacomo Di Can- tero, a bay Belgian Warmblood stallion owned by Bea Jarzynska. Giacomo Di Cantero is by Eurocommerce Berlin and out of a Clinton dam. The pair jumped clean for a maximum of 50 per- formance points and was awarded 35 out of a possible 50 points by the style judge, for a total score of 85 points.


Reid also took second position, this time riding Beaulieu’s Heartbreaker for owner Bea Jarzynska. Reid and the bay Selle Luxembour- geois stallion by Heartbreaker and out of a Cassi- ni I dam had one rail down for 45 performance points and were awarded a style score of 34 for a total of 70 points. Beaulieu’s Heartbreaker was bred in Canada by Beaulieu Farm of Saint-Jus- tine de Newton, QC.


NOTE – The star * beside a horse’s name denotes that it is Canadian-bred.


Robert McIntosh of Windsor, Ont., is a four- time O’Brien winner as Canada’s Trainer of the Year. Among the more than 3,500 winners he has trained are Artsplace and Staying Together. Frank Barroby of Ravenscrag, Sask., was a leading jock- ey across the prairie provinces in the 1960s before retiring to become a champion trainer in British Columbia. Three times he was the leading trainer at Hastings Park,Vancouver, and was elected to the B.C. Hall of


Fame in 2009.


Festivities for the gala dinner at the Missis- sauga Convention Centre on Derry Road began with the cocktail reception and silent auction at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. Guest speaker was the celebrated Gemini Award winner and stand-up comedian Tim Steeves.

The top eight horses in the Five, Six and Seven and Eight-Year-Old divisions in the East- ern Region will now go head-to-head with the Central and Western Region qualified horses in the Jump Canada National Young Horse Finals taking place at the Canadian Show Jumping Tournament held from September 22-26 in Pal- grave, ON. Each age division consists of three classes, offering $3,000, $4,000 and $10,000 in prize money.


The purpose of the Jump Canada Young Horse Series is to encourage the development of young show jumping talent and to give Canadian breeders additional incentives to breed superior show jumping prospects. Competing on a level playing field, the horses are divided according to
