Fun-D Ride August 2010

Once again Janice Clegg and Morris Radom- sky hosted the annual fund raising event for OTRA at their beautiful Pine River Ranch over the August long weekend. A total of 36 riders rode the trails over the 3 day event and 50 hungry OTRA support- ers attended the Fun-D beef dinner on Saturday night. The ranch near Everitt, Ontario is in close proximity to some fantastic trail riding in the Duf- ferin and Simcoe County Forests. All proceeds will be donated to trail development.

To quote Bob and Marg Webb who supplied these fabulous pictures, “the weather was good and the food was great. Everyone seemed to have a good time and the campfires were just as impressive as last year.

Fun-D Ride!” Thank you Janice and Morris for another great

News from the Board

We’re right in the middle of the Best riding months, which means that all the board members are very busy and therefore there was not a Director’s Meeting in August.

OTRA was to have participating at a new trade show in South River September 25 & 26 called Equine Industry Educational Fair and Trade Show but it has unfortunately been cancelled. A big thank you to all who helped with the Fun-D Ride and made it a great success. Wendy Downer, Marvin Halladay and Marjory Morden led rides out, Kari Kelly collected waivers and atten- dance. Marjory also looked after the Silent Auction. We had a few tense moments on Friday as we had had more than our fare share of rain and the trail to the camp was a little soggy. But, the rain held off for the weekend, other than a few drops and we had 3 days of great trail riding.

development. If you need funds for a trail in your area you can contact me for a grant form and for- ward it to the Board of Directors for consideration. Janice Clegg President

join the fight for equestrian trails.

OTRA’s mission is to promote recreational trail riding and the creation, development, preservation and safe use of trails. Over the years OTRA has strived to achieve these goals by initiating many large project to draw attention to the need

for more trails for equestri- ans. OTRA has members representing the equestrian interest on rail trail develop- ment committees, regional forest management commit- tees, local trail groups, the Ontario Trails Council, Ontario Equestrian Federa- tion and the Trans Canada Trail.

Several of Ontario’s favourite riding areas are today available for equestri- an use as a direct result of the efforts of OTRA. You can ride in Algonquin Park, along the historic Hastings Heritage Rail Trail and in the beautiful hills of Copeland Forest, just to name a few.

Each year OTRA puts together a schedule of rides held across the province to introduce riding areas to its members. These rides occur over weekends with camp- ing provided on a private farm or campground. Occa- sionally we host longer rides up to one or two weeks. There are no fees to attend these events unless there is a user fee involved with a county forest or man- agement area.

An educational clinic workshop weekend usually takes place in the spring, just in time for those riders new to trail riding and camping with their equine friends to learn “how to” for the upcoming ride season. OTRA will also travel to your area with this informa- tion should a saddle club or others request it and we can arrange for instructors to get

Our Annual General Meeting takes place in mid- spring where all our busi- ness is attended to and very interesting guest speakers inform and entertain our members.

The Board of Direc- tors meets each in the evening on the third Thurs- day of each month, at the Schomberg Library. Here the Board plans and orga- nizes events, looks in trail development issues and guides the association along its way. Members are invit- ed to stand for nomination for Director if they would like to contribute to the association. OTRA relies on a volunteer labour force and greatly encourages any member with specialties, talents and dedication to step forward.

OTRA has accom- plished much in the past with a very dedicated mem- bership and volunteers and we envision more to come in the future.

Have a keen interest in Trail Development in your own area? Why not become an OTRA Regional Representative?
