Ontario Reining Horse Association News President’s Message

As you read this, we will be winding down show season with only the Grand Finale and Sired Stakes Futurity left in Ontario, and the Affiliate Finals in Blainville, Quebec. If you qualify for the Affiliate Finals, please consider attending the event – the Quebec Reining Association puts on a great show and its members treat O.R.H.A. members very well. I have a family wedding that weekend, so will be unable to attend this year to cheer you on, but do encourage you to participate.

We had some terrific shows in the past few weeks, and saw some impressive performances. Although it was only a one day event, the Meaford Show at Y NOT FARMS was well attended and the weather cooperated – hot, dry and sunny but comfortable, and it was an enjoy- able day.

Fletchers hosted another show the last weekend of July, with their usual flair – some- thing for everyone and some fun events. Roy and Joan Ionson donated a saddle that was raffled off at the end of the show, with every competitor receiving a ticket – Kelly Hedges and his son, Steven, won the saddle and then the saddle rack! Congrats to them both.

Nomi Tree Farm sponsored the delicious Saturday evening barbecue (a Fletchers show tradition), and Reinbow Ridge Equestrian the Friday evening pizza party. We were all well fed that weekend.

And Kodak stepped up once again with free disposable cameras, hats and complimentary Champion photos.

And Mother Nature looked after us there too, with NO RAIN all weekend.

We can’t say enough about John and Sharon and Dan and Berenice – they work very hard to put on a great show every time, and we certainly appreciate it.

August wrapped up with the Spooks Gotta Gun, and there is a whole separate writeup on that.

Most people do not realise how much time and effort goes into organising a horse show, and I hope you will each take the time to thank these great folks for giving us the opportunity to get out and show our horses – and to have so much fun doing it.

Youth Update By K.D. Grainger

As the show season is progressing it is becoming even more obvious that the dedication of our active youth members can be seen in and most definitely out of the show pen. At the Reining Classic Show held at Fletchers in Waterford last month, youth members pulled together to hold a successful horse wash and their hard work as well as the generous support from ORHA members is much appreciated.

Just a reminder to the youth and concerned adults, that to receive ORHyA year end awards, youth members must be actively participating in youth events.

Also, the ORHyA is planning a social event for Youth members for the Grande Finale show. Further details will be posted on the ORHA website at www.orha.on.ca .

Spooks Gotta Gun Futurity By Carol Ivey

Ken and Dana Van Alstine did a fantastic job with their mid-August show at the London Fairgrounds.

With the indoor warmup area in the main hall with the stalls, we had a perfect setup, which was greatly appreciated with the heat and high humidity of that weekend. The whole event was professionally and smoothly run, and had so many special fea- tures and fun events for everyone.

The first was a Show Me The Money class on Friday night, followed by a full slate of classes on Saturday.

The feature class of the day was the Derby, won by Tim Stanton in the Open, Paul McGrath in the Limited Open and Cara Brown

in the Non-Pro.

Saturday evening’s special event was a Pro Am class that involved a Non-Pro riding the first half of the pattern and a trainer the second half. Even though the class didn’t start until after 10 P.M., it attracted a very large number of entries. And congratulations to Steven and Kelly Hedges for winning the Champion buckles.

And the evening concluded with a party that included karaoke and pizza for all, spon- sored by Van Alstine Reining Horses. Sunday’s highlight events were the 2 year old Pleasure Class and 3 year old Futurity. Bill Rinzema took Open Champion in Sunday’s 2 year old Pleasure Class on Mama’s Got a Juicebox, owned by John Matthews, while Lacey Siemonson and Little Ace Man

took home the Non-Pro title.

The Futurity showcased some great 3 year olds, with Harvey Stevens ultimately winning the Open and Larry McDougall the Non-Pro division.

ble.

The show would not have been the suc- cess it was without the many people who worked with the Van Alstines to put it all together – Duane Hicks (can’t say enough about how hard he worked and how invaluable he was), Alan and Linda Barnes (who worked very hard, while also doing a great job as announcers), Wayne Beaudoin (everyone needs friends like that), Julie Bacon of Picovs for the tackshop and Dieter Wahr (photogra- pher) and Mike Lees (videographer). And of course, we can’t forget the many generous sponsors, who made the show possi-

Major sponsors were Duane and Deidre Hicks, Tim and Lisa Stanton, Mark and Michelle Schols, Van Alstine Reining Horses, Alan and Linda Barnes, Sandy and Darrell Ebersole, Lorrie Larock, Michelle Mailhiot, Alison Sutcliffe, Chris Renny, Dr. James Crawford, Larry and Lynne McDougall, Sharon Hart, Club Amarillo, Picovs, PG Col- lection, Pards, Granton Trailers, Huron Trac- tor, Radisson Hotel and Suites, Avon Feed Mill for bedding.

If it wasn’t for these sponsors, we would not have a show, and I hope I didn’t forget anyone.

Thank you Ken and Dana for putting it all together – you have set the bar high for future shows.
