14/ SEPTEMBER 2010 THE RIDER The Next Generation of Great Horsepeople Starts Here!

Hayes Horsemanship, owned and operated by Lindsay Hayes of London, Ontario, was pleased to offer a unique experience for it’s advanced youth rid- ers. Young ladies between the ages of 14 and 16 were invited to take part in a week long clinic with the theme, “5 Days in the Boots of a Horse Trainer”. Each of the participants have been rid- ing for several years and dedicated a lot of time to developing other skills around the barn, maintaining stalls, handling horses, treating minor injuries etc.

The clinic was designed to give the girls an idea of what life would be like as a horse trainer, as well as to fur- ther develop their interest and passion for working with their assigned horses towards a goal. Bridgecreek Stables, just outside of Lambeth, Ontario, kind- ly offered their facilities and horses.

The horses included: Quarter Horses, Paints, Halflingers, Appaloosas, one Thoroughbred and one Shetland pony. Each day the ladies split up all the

daily barn chores amongst themselves. They were each assigned two horses as their own “training horses” for the week, with specific goals requested by the owners.

sure of working with a yearling with minimal handling.

The 8 year old owner of a 20 yr old quarter horse, requested that the horse do some jogging work so that she would be a little slower and less resistant to go into the jog or trot. One owner of a paint horse requested that the horse do some extra trailer load- ing work to help overcome her fear in the trailer. A 4 yr old halfinger mare was trailered into the farm for some “ground man- ner bootcamp”. Another owner requested that the girls do lots of loping with her horse to ease her own anxiety about loping the horse.

The girls also had the plea-

By the end of the week the quarter horse mare was jogging slowly and pleasantly to the delight of her young owner. The paint mare was loaded and unloaded into the trailer repeatedly with patience and kind reassurance. The halflinger mare was “sacked out” all over her body, saddled and leading like a pro. The paint mare learned how to become more balanced and relaxed in the lope and the yearling was lead- ing respectfully with a saddle on. Highlights of the week also included saddling and backing two horses for the first time as well as watching first hand as the yearling colt was gelded (special thanks to Doctor Kendra Boehnke from Ilderton Equine for her patience and enthusiasm with the girls). The participants also did a ground driving session, some lungeing,

wrapping polo bandages, and prepared their horses thoroughly for advertise- ment/sale pictures. All activities were thoroughly supervised and included group/individual instruction to maxi- mize the amount each horse and trainer combination learned as well as keeping horses and trainers as safe as possible. The clinic was a huge success thanks to the cooperation of the facility owners and horse owners, and all the hard work of the participants. Since the clinic some follow-up sessions have been booked and we look forward to sharing our newest challenges and successes!
