Smile, it's the second best thing you can do with your lips. New Year's Day 45 BC
New Years day was celebrated on 1 January for the first time in 45 BC, when Roman dictator Julius Caesar establishes the Jul- ian calendar. On the advice of the astronomer Sosigenes, Caesar added 67 days to the year 46 BC in order to repair the damage done to the imperfect Roman calendar by the passage of time. Celebration of New Year's Day in January fell out of practice during the Middle Ages, but after the adoption of the Gregorian - or modern - calendar in 1582, New Year's was again observed on the first day of January. Since then, people around the world have gathered en masse in cities and towns to celebrate the arrival of the New Year.

I would like to buy 3/4 copies of "the best of the Herald" to give out as Christmas presents. As I live in Portugal can you advise cost of issues and postage . Have transfered 20 Quid -well worth it-Many thanks -Charles. My family are originally from Accrington /Oswaldtwistle, my father left Accrington in 1950 for India to manufacture Textile machinery-He originally worked for Howard & Bullough (Platt) and Accrington Brick & Tile (NORI-iron spelt backword )-Aunty Ivy will fill you in with the rest of the detail. ( we posted a copy to Ivy.) There was a time when you could travel to any part of the world where there was a textile industry and find someone from (Oswaldtwistle/Accrington/Blackburn/Oldham) Lancashire. Howard & Bullough sent fitters to all parts -I have a good friend here in Portugal who´s grandfather went to Brasil to install Northrop-Blackburn looms and stayed off after the job was completed. Unfortunately my friend is a Chelsea supporter.
I got that book for Christmas,
“ 50 Things To Do Before You Die.” I would have thought the obvious one was “Shout For Help”.
