AFC Padiham Following a hectic month, only two games have been possible due to the adverse weather conditions. Gargrave FC were our hosts in November and on an awful surface we managed to grind out an excellent 2-0 victory. Although dominating most of the game it took two second half goals from Greg Kuzminski and Ric Hodson to ensure three points. Our other game was at home to Oxenhope. A muddling affair again not on the best of surfaces ensured and the boys took an early lead again through Hodson. Lapses in the Padiham defence saw the visitors score twice in two minutes to make it 2-1. A missed penalty and a dubious decision not to send their player off, left it down to goalkeeper Lee Rushton to equalise, up for a last minute corner ensuring a deserved share of the spoils. The boys have no games now until the new year when they will be looking to continue their excellent recent form.

Padiham Football Club History Call.
PFC’s ongoing search for more information on the origins of the club which formed in 1878 has unearthed an interesting advert which was placed in the Glasgow Herald in 1882, which ran something like this “ Wanted, a full back; one who would be willing to teach a young Lancashire club.” This caught the eye of a local 22 year old, James McConnell who at the time was the goalkeeper, captain and secretary of Johnstone Rovers Football Club and worked in the goods department at Johnstone Station for the Glasgow and South - Western Railway. McConnell replied to the advert asking to be considered for the position at Padiham Football Club. Two weeks later he received a letter from PFC committee accepting his application. The wages offered were better than at the Railway company so he decided to try his luck in England. The advert had been placed by ardent supporters including a Mr Pollard, who were concerned that their club was going to ruin. McConnell came to Pa- diham in November 1882, and played for the team at full back. He became a firm favourite and turned the club around, reverting back to goalkeeper and becoming team captain. He strengthened the club by bringing more players from Scotland and soon became club sec- retary. McConnell also became the landlord of “ The Cricketers and Footballers Arms,” on Mill St In Padiham which was known as “The PadihamFootball House,” and the Rendezvous for the visiting teams. Can any Herald reader help PFC with information and old photographs of the pub or any information regarding the history of Padiham Football Club. Chain Mail I would like to start by thanking all those involved in a very successful Padiham “Light Switch On,” both the organizers and those residents and there families that turned out to support all the charities and stall holders on the evening. I would like to thank my guests who helped switch on the lights, Whitegate Childrens Centre, Padiham Green Primary School, Public Servant of the year Steve Richards, and Grace O’Malley for some wonderful singing, Final thanks to Rev Jones for blessing the crib. I hope you all had a happy Christmas and you all have a fulfilling New Year. December has come and gone and as Mayor I have been happy to have carried out a few visits to the elderly residents in Padiham. These include, The Hilton, Spring Bank Cottage, Meadow Lodge ,Windsor Care Home , and Woodside residential home. I was always accompanied on my visits with mince Pies and Mulled Wine which I know the residents thoroughly enjoyed. In between these visits we had been invited to Christingle event held by St Leonards at the Town Hall , a Christmas Carol Service held at the Unitarian Church, then we attended the Pendleside Hospice light up a life event. It has been a busy time but a very enjoyable experience. With the New Year comes new challenges for us all. I Look forward to writing the next chain mail of 2010. Best Wishes Vince.
