The Great Canadian Ultimate Game Coast to coast, Ultimate players make history BY DANNY SAUNDERS
On July 17th, 2010 Ultimate players from coast-to-coast competed in the largest Ultimate game ever held in Canada: the Great Canadian Ultimate Game. Proposed to Ultimate Canada by Art Hawkins of the VUL, the Great Canadian Ultimate Game was a national Ultimate game aimed at raising money for charities and promoting Ultimate in Canada.
This national game took off this year
with a 25 hour long game that included 23 communities! Over $8,000 was raised by players to support the Boys and Girls Club and Right to Play.
SO HOW DID THE GAME WORK?
The game started in Yellowknife at midnight on July 17th. Every hour it moved to a new community, where the score was carried forward and the game continued on. From Yellowknife the game went to the west coast of Canada, then to Newfoundland before moving back west. All told, 23 communities representing all 10 provinces and 1 territory participated in this great game! The team with the highest score at the end of the day received 60% of the donations for their charity, while the other team received 40% of the donations for their charity. In the end team white, representing the Boys and Girl Club of Canada, won by a mere 2 points over team red representing Right to Play! The final score of the game was 253 to 251.
