gold? What? I just want to win! I hate not playing to my potential and being a reason why the team looses. Playing teams/players that I don’t like gets me fired up and in game mode. I love trash talk, and playing a physical game.
14. How are you finding the travel to tournaments? Tired of it? Counting the days? I love the travel time, spending that time with your teammates and brothers helps to create that bond that you need to win on the field. I will never get sick of the travel time.
15. What championships have you won? CanadianJunior Nationals, World Juniors, two UPA Open Championships, two World Open Championships.
16. Which ones have you not won?.... And are you holding out until you win them? World Games, World Clubs (open)... Canadian Nationals (open)
petential and the competition.
18. Do you listen to music prior to the game? If so, what bands or singers, and why? Most of the time I do not, I feel when I do it is because I am trying to distract myself from something else and it usualy backfires. The odd time I might listen just to get some energy going and in that case it would always be rap music.
19. Gotta ask......Who’s the best of the four of you? Me!!!!!!! That is what I expect them to say.
20. On that same note, is one of you better at one thing than the other? Do you each of strengths (better vertical, better handler, more consistent D?) Yes we all have our strengths, in my opinionJamie is the best defender, Ken the best athlete, Bill the most consistent handler, and I feel I am the best all around handler/best looking.... It had to be said lol. 21. How has the game changed from when you started? When I started it was vertical stacks and zone in the wind. Much has changed....Or has it for you? I am seeing a lot more complex defenses then I saw when I first started to play. Vertical stack is strong again along with horizontal and split stack. Much better
17. What do you most like about the game? Ie. If you’re handler, does that give you the rush? Or the flow? Or the layouts? Or the D-blocks? What do you enjoy the most? I think I enjoy the competition aspect of the game, I am a very competitive person and need that in life. Not realy any one aspect of the game that stands out for me other then playing to my top
40 athletes are playing the game now.
22. How do you see the sport evolving. Back to v-stacks, or something else we haven’t seen yet? A lot of teams are using the vert stack and a number of teams have started to use the split stack very effectivly as well.
23. Is the Ultimate community doing enough to get the sport growing at the youth level? If not, do you have
any ideas? If yes, great. I am not in a place to comment on this as I am not doing my part in helping it grow at the youth level any longer due to family and lack of time, but I would like to see Juniors go to a men’s and women’s format. I know Juniors would take a drop in numbers for a bit but I think it would, in the end, attract more youth to play the game.
24. Which are your favourite tournaments, and why? UPA’s and any Worlds’ tournaments. I love top level competition and it is always great to play against other countries and see if they play the game a diferent way.
25. Often ulty players can remember big plays from years ago even. Name a couple of plays you saw or were part of that really stick in your memory. One play that sticks out for me is the catch that Mike Grant made in Vancouver during the finals of Worlds against USA when he tipped the disk over his defender, spun around him and then layed out to make the catch. Got up and through the point. Another one that stood out was
a catch that Jamie made in the finals of No Borders a couple year’s back. We were on double game point in the finals and pulling, I think he got the D, then it turned over, he get’s the D again and then makes a crazy catch on a swill hammer through 3 defenders to win the game. One play that I made that stands
out for me was a catch in World Juniors in Germany against Sweden in the finals. I only remember this because I got up pretty high and that does not happen very often. [Ed. Note – as a coach on that team, Derek skyed over two Swedish defenders, and though he was younger and smaller, he stopped and launched vertically to make a sick catch for the point. Years later he was presented with a blurry photo capturing the exact moment and catch. I’ll never forget it. -- Dave Brown]
