O P
n two Fridays in late August and early
September this year the Club‘s Sponsored Walk Personality for 2008, Paul Freedman MBE, organised the un- organisable – the Rotary Club of Hornchurch & Up- minster!
aul had al- ready kindly
agreed to lead the gaggle of walkers on the Club‘s annual spon- sored walk to raise money for St Francis Hospice. But he thought that he could do more for the Club‘s fund raising activi- ties by holding a pre-walk collection on behalf of the Hospice in Sainsbury‘s at Hornchurch on the two Fri- days immediately prior to the Sponsored Walk.
N
ow Paul thought he would be able to do
this as he had managed similar collections in the past on behalf of St Fran- cis Hospice – and the cru- cial touch here – he knew the Manager of Sains- bury‘s who had supported Paul‘s work on behalf of the hospice! But more than this, Paul generously sug- gested that although he would be there for the
raising for St Francis. N
ow this simple but very effective device
of shaking a collecting tin at Sainsbury‘s had never occurred to the Club – and particularly not to me or the PR team. So with some trepidation I fell in with Paul‘s suggestion – the trepidation being caused by Paul‘s further suggestion that not only should we wear our Rotary T shirts but also have a notice hung around our necks saying ‗Sponsor me for Rotary‘s Sponsored Walk in Aid of St Francis‘.
W
hen I arrived on our first Friday Paul
with a grin handed me a bright yellow notice to hang around my neck – he‘d got one his neck so
whole of each Friday – from 8.30 in the morning to 5 o‘clock at night – he would pass all the takings on to our Club to help boost the moneys we were
there was no arguing with him. So I stood there – and to my surprise the hoards of shoppers in Sainsbury‘s were very positive about our pres- ence and the money came rolling in! Other members of the Club nobly signed up to sup- port Paul, so for most of the two days there were two collecting tins encouraging the shop- pers to help St Francis.
on each Friday averaged £550 making a substantial contribution of £1,100 to this year‘s cheque to St Francis. But Paul didn‘t finish there: as he was the lead walker on the Spon- sored Walk, he got himself sponsored by his friends and raised another £40 for the Club‘s event.
A B
rian Taffs hopes to hold the presentation
to St Francis Hospice early in the New Year (some moneys have still to come in) and Paul will be an honoured guest at that oc- casion: rarely has one person done so much for the Club‘s fund raising ef- forts as Paul Freedman!
