e held our 15th annual walk in aid of Saint Francis Hospice
this morning. Enthusiastic walkers ignored the weather and stepped out into the fresh air and historic Es- sex countryside for a fundraising
walk for this local charity that provides free treatment, care and support to adults affected by life limiting illness.
he seven-mile walk took place in Belhus Woods Country Park, Aveley. Walkers of all
ages followed the trail laid by event organiser, Ro- tarian Brian Taffs and his team. They all enjoyed the walk through woodland and around lakes with
an abundance of wildlife and fine views. The country park was once part of the Belhus estate that dates back to the mid 14th century.
H A
ospice supporter and dedi- cated charity fundraiser
Paul Freedman, MBE, joined the walk and set walkers on their way
pproximately 60 walkers took part in the Clubs fif-
teenth sponsored walk to raise funds for St Frances Hos- pice Havering-atte- Bower.
E
ach year we (the small group who
arrange the walk) try to come up with a new and interesting walk, discussions start early in the year with Tony
and John Kent study- ing their maps (or in John‘s case dog walk- ing experience). As you can imagine after 15 years finding an original route in the local area is not easy but they have
10 never failed to ―produce the goods‖. T
he suggested routes are reviewed, what is shown
on the map is not always ap- parent on the ground and an initial investigation under- taken and the best option agreed. We did investigate the possibility of revisiting Thorndon Country Park but on our first visit one of our num- ber ―Carter‖ John‘s dog, our old friend and walking compan-
ion was injured when he tried to head- butt a 4 X 4 and had to be rushed to Wylie‘s for urgent treatment. He has made a full recovery but we decided not to use this area.
