A message from the Head Teacher – Juliet Strang
This magazine is full of examples of the wonderful things our school does. It has been assembled and produced by students and is a great example of the extent and range of their talents.
My vision for Villiers is that every student receives excel- lent teaching so that they can make outstanding progress at school and leave with a brilliant set of results. There are other things that are important too. I want all students at Vil- liers to be knowledgeable about the world; to broaden their minds through having a range of interesting, challenging and engaging experiences outside their usual lessons. Most of all I want our students to be capable, independent learners and responsible citizens able to establish good, happy and healthy lives.
Since starting at Villiers I have worked hard with senior staff and other colleagues to ensure that all teachers make the quality of their teaching a top priority and we have improved our teaching tremendously, through excellent, frequent train- ing for staff; by introducing trained student lesson observers (being one of the first schools in the country to do so); and by employing excellent teachers to work in the school. There is still more work to be done to improve teaching further, and this will be our top priority next year.
We have spent much of this year planning a new curriculum at Key Stage 3, 4 and 5. As a result we are offering ‘A’ levels
to year 12 students and a range of other courses. This year both year 8 and 9 students went through the options process and with a significantly larger range of courses on offer. Year 7 and 8 have a very exciting new curriculum in September in the Humanities, Arts, Technology and Citizenship depart- ments, and parents of these year groups will be invited to exhibitions of their learning every six weeks. Year 7 and 8 students also have the Learning Futures Curriculum which is co-constructed with students.
It is important that Villiers students treat each other well, with respect, consideration and kindness. Everyone wants others to be welcoming and friendly. This year the students have learned about their human rights and their right to learn with- out harassment from others. I would like all students to show this respect to each other at all times; to contribute to making Villiers a peaceful and happy school where all can flourish and do well.
I would like to finish by taking this opportunity to thank the VHS student editorial team, Ms Waldron and all the staff who made contributions to the magazine, and finally to all staff for their hard work and dedication to Villiers.
Ms Strang
