School Governor Shahid Khan wins award for Governor of the Year.

TWO people from Southall and one from Ealing have done their schools and the borough proud by winning national accolades at The Teaching Awards this week. Shahid Khan, of Villiers High School walked away with a trophy following the awards on Tuesday. Mr Khan, who has been governor for four years and is also a parent governor at North Primary School in Southall, was given the Department for Education award for Governor of the Year, London and the south-east. He said: “To say I’m excited would be an understatement, but most of all I’m really pleased for Southall. “I’m also really pleased for Villiers and this award represents another milestone for the school. I would recommend more people to get involved in the school’s governing body as it makes a real difference in people’s lives.” Taking a genuine interest in how the students learn and what they are achieving, rarely a week goes by without a visit by Shahid. His visibility around the school means that students and staff alike know that he is in touch with ‘the front line’ and understands the complexities of how a school is run.

Approachable and well-mannered Shahid thoroughly deserves this recognition by the Department for Education.

No stranger to the staff and parents of North Primary school where he is also on the governing body, Shahid says:

‘I want Villiers to be a major educational institution in Southall, and I want everyone to be proud to be associated with the school (pupils, parents, governors, teachers, staff, community).

I believe in the theory that a happy pupil will be an achieving pupil.’

Abdi has demonstrated hard work and commitment to his school, and has consistently been such a positive role model to those around him. A team player in every sense; he loves sport; his desire to improve academically; staying after school for extra tuition and his contribution towards high profile events such as last year’s 2009 year 6 Induction, the International Student Conference and the recent Stars Awards ceremony has put his name up in lights as a true example of Somali Success and Achievement in this school. Congratulations Abdi!

Year 11 Student wins Bronze medal in the British Masters Open Taekwondo Championships

Kajamugan from Villiers High School took part in a national taekwondo championship and achieved a bronze medal position on the 20th February 2010. Kajamugan practices Gukwoone Martial Arts and has been training for the last 5 years. He shows a persist- ent and positive attitude towards his training as well as his commitment to his education. He demon- strates a great respect to his instructor and senior in- structors as well as his co- students in class. Despite having exams and being a much focused student on his education, Kajamugan never misses training and shows great strength of character with a very positive attitude. He is an outstanding role model and should be proud of winning Bronze prize. He is also training to become an Assistant Junior Instructor with Guk- woone Martial arts which means that he is learning to become a martial arts instructor, which for his age is fantastic. We have high hopes that Kajamugan will one day realise his ambitions of participate in the Olympics.
