alternative curriculum

The Alternative Curriculum was devised to provide an innovative style of education which involves hands-on learning through fun, games, activities, role play and trips. A dedicated teacher and teaching assistant are involved in ensuring the optimum deliv- ery of a cross-curricular programme, where different subject areas are linked together through stories.

The students are stimulated to learn in a variety of ways which involves role play, games, outdoor activities and trips etc. The Alternative Curriculum Class was in- volved in many different experiences which they have written about here, including a 3-day camping trip. Each activity has a focussed writing exercise which has en- hanced student’s communication ability. Brain gyms occur in order to facilitate better performance and responses.

The Alternative Curriculum has been a successful programme which has embedded into it the ‘learning to learn’ philosophy at its core. There is great emphasis on the students enjoying their learning and working together in groups.

Mr. T. Murphy. ARABIAN ART WORK

For our Arabian art work we used a variety of colours for the pictures and it took a long time to prepare. We based this on our study of the ‘The Alchemist’ in the project based on the Arabian Nights. This picture shows three ladies sitting outside a mosque.

By Jasmin Allen. AMAZON RAIN FOREST BUTTERFLY

In our art lessons in the Alternative Curriculum Class we do art lessons on different subjects. This one was on an Amazon Rainforest creature. Our class studied some of these butterflies and then, in groups, we made them using wire frame and paper mache before painting them in a va-

riety of colours. We really used our L2L skills on this one!!

By Jasmin Allen. TRIPS!

The best part about the Alternative Curriculum is learning through trips. The first trips we went on was to see The Lion King at the Lyceum theatre.

THE LONDON DUNGEONS

The London Dungeons was one of the best trips. We learned a lot about the Great Fire of London, and Jack the Ripper who killed many women and also Sweeney Todd who was a barber who killed people, cutting their fingers off and sold them to a butcher who lived next door. The best bit was the ride at the end!!!

By Aidarus Sharif. LEARNING IS FUN!

We like being in the Alternative Curriculum Class because we play games and learn at the same time. The kinds of games we play are Touch Africa, Silent Ball, Splat, Mallet’s Mallet. There are other games that we play that develop our Learning to Learn Skills; where we try to improve our team work and develop our memory better. These are just some of the games we play and enjoy!!!

By Joshua Telespher and Siddharth Thapa GEOGRAPHY IN THE ALTERNATIVE CURRICULUM CLASS

In this class we studied ‘The Lion King’, which was set in the Serengeti of Tanzania. We learned about various countries in Africa like Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia and Rwanda. We enjoyed looking at Mr. Murphy’s photographs and learning about Africa.

We also learnt about the problems of deforestation through the story of Chico Mendes in the Amazon Rainforest. We now realise the importance of the rainforests of the world in trying to stop global warming.

Another area of our study has been The Middle East and we did so much about art and geography and RE of the countries in Arabia.
