Following the massive success of this year’s BBC News School Report, Breaking News was created. The City Learning Centre with state of the art facilities and expert staff on hand is the venue for this exciting project.

“This time I wisely chose to be in the

role of directing, which meant I had to mentor, help, and give constructive criticism, so that the next time they perform, they could

improve on mistakes. At one point I found myself convincing a member of our group not to join another group. As this member was feeling uncomfortable with working with us, I had to respect him and let him go. I tried to make the loss of a team mate not affect the rest of us” By Nilukshi Hettiarachige

Breaking News!!!

My experience of the Breaking News project was absolutely fantastic!!!

I learnt loads of new things at the CLC including autocue; what a brilliant place!

It was nerve wrecking and fun at the same time!!! Shakib Ahmed, Year 7

Going to the Ealing CLC was very interesting as I learnt to do lots of different things I hadn’t done before. I experienced the pressures of working in a studio both in front of and behind the camera. This is a fabulous opportunity to understand all the roles of producing broadcast news. I tried my hand at directing. Even though it seemed pretty easy when I actually tried it I realised it was difficult to actually keep the group focussed as well as doing my own work. Filming is stressful because you have to ensure everything is running smoothly eg the autocue going at the right speed for the presenter to speak clearly and steadily, and that the screen text is put up at the exact time. I had fun even though there were difficult moments, and I’m sure that the others enjoyed this project as much as I did. Parvathy.

I want to tell you about Breaking News but one word to describe it is impossible. If I said just how good it is then I would write about 5 pages! Pupils from years 7, 8 and 9 learnt how to find good news stories, re-write them and to present to cameras, to read the script from autocue, to apply text on the screen, to apply backgrounds to the green screen, and to check the sound levels are correct.

The best bit for me was being the leader of my group, as director. This is because I was able to boss older people around! My message to you and any new-comer is to study hard, especially at English to be able to get the chance to do this. Ramanjit – Year 7
