Junaid syed who has just taken his GCses was lucky enough to be selected by the sutton Trust to attend a one week Maths summer school at Imperial college in early July. He was one of 25 students considered to be at the top of their class in Maths, which was the criteria for selection.
Maths in relation to astronomy and space travel was the theme for the week.
I sprang a visit on him on the final day of presentations; sitting quietly at the back it took nearly 30 minutes for him to spot me! After the shock, I think he was quite pleased I’d come to watch his team’s presentation on ‘Time, night-time navigation at sea using the stars in relation to the moon, longitudes, latitudes and the maritime clock; invented by John Harrison.’ Junaid’s undergraduate ambassadors had nothing but praise for him, and he clearly made a lot of friends from schools all over london; planning to stay in touch with them all and meet them again in central london during the summer holidays. Here are excerpts from his diary:
Got a chance to design and launch rockets which was great, and enjoyed watching them blow up as soon as they were launched. We played a game called “Game Theory” about options and probabilities. Then we left for the royal Observatory in Green- wich where I learnt a lot about space; after which on to the
Summer Schools
Every year students at Villiers High School are offered the op- portunity to attend fully funded university residential experi- ences; also known as Summer Schools. Running from Easter through to September, students from years 9, 10 and 11 and now year 12 get the opportunity to see what university life is like, study subjects they would not have thought were options at university, and meet young people from all over the country at the same.
The experience of living in halls of residence and attending lectures, seminars and interactive workshops is always received with excitement and enthusiasm. We have a record number going this year too! If you want to know more about this superb opportunity which
looks great on your CV, then contact Ms Waldron for details.

london eye and saw london in all its splendour. Walking back we saw many attractions and people doing wacky things on the streets of london. We went to a lecture about “the mathematics about juggling”. It was fantastic! The lecturer told us how he became a math- ematician and how he found juggling fascinating. It was very amusing for everyone. Afterwards we went on a trip to the sci- ence museum where we watched a 3D movie about the Hubble telescope which was launched to explore space in all its beauty. That evening we went for dinner at Wagamama’s – a Chinese/ Japanese food restaurant which, in my opinion, charged a lot for very little. Afterwards we went to the theatre to watch the lion King! There are no other words to describe it other than bril- liant. The song Hakunamata is still in my head to this very day; one I’ll never forget.
