International Profiling
Ever since the inception of ITU’s Development Sector, the ABU has been associated with its developmental activities. The ABU has played leading roles for broadcasters at the Buenos Aires WTDC, at the 2nd WTDC in Valetta and in Istanbul (2002). The ABU proposals to WTDC-2006 (Doha) helped to form the basis of the action programme adopted by the conference for the broadcasting sector.
ITU-R Study Groups We have continued contributing to the work of the Study Groups. The ABU contributed a crucial document to ITU-R WP 6A on 18 kHz IF bandwidth for digital radio receivers.
A document on the results of HD-Radio tests in Hanoi has been being prepared at the Department. After approval, this will be contributed to WP 6A for consideration.
Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) The ABU has been successful in setting up a closer relationship with the APT. For this purpose, an MOU was negotiated between the ABU and APT Secretariats.
The ABU has now signed an MOU with the APT which aims at enhanced cooperation between the two organisations on broadcasting spectrum issues in the region and at the ITU World Conferences.
The APT and ABU regularly participate and contribute to each other’s meetings.
Digital TV and Radio System Proponents We have been maintaining close relationship with the DVB, WorldDMB Forum, DRM Consortium, HD- Radio and the FLO Forum, and are participating in their work. A field trial of the HD-Radio system in the MW and FM bands was carried out in Vietnam in February last. Several other events have been mooted with some of these organisations.
All the five system proponents contribute generously to the ABU technical activities. Sharad Sadhu participated in the DRM General Assembly in March, advising the DRM to focus on implementation in the medium wave frequency band in this region.
