In Touch with Members Meeting ABU Members
In-country Visits to Members The TD attaches top priority to remain in contact with the members. This is accomplished when TD executives visit member organisations (while on other business in the country or expressly for this purpose) for a day or so. This provides us with a valuable opportunity to discuss major technical concerns of the members with their senior-most executives, offering suggestions and solutions where necessary.
As part of the visit, presentations are made on diverse topics including those on new developments in broadcasting.
Senior executives of some members were met and their activities with the ABU discussed while they were in Kuala Lumpur, either for an ABU event or visiting the ABU Secretariat. These members include: BBS, ZDF, DDI, AIR, BECIL, BBC, Technomedia, RTHK, DVB, RNW, DRM, LNTV, MRTBN, PTV, EAP, ITN, NBT, FBC, TPT, BA, RFS, Sony, Newtec, Rohde & Schwarz, Globecast, CRA, MPA, Benchmark, WorldDMB Forum and APB.
VOV-Vietnam In February, Nadeem met with the senior executives of VOV, including Vice- Presidents Mr Le Dinh Dao, Madam Hoang Minh Nguyet, Mr Dao Duy Hua and the Director International Cooperation Department Mr Nguyen Tien Long. The main topic of discussion was on ways ABU could assist in the transition to digital. In particular, VOV has asked if ABU could recommend on which digital standard to adopt.
RNW-Netherlands
In March Sharad visited RNW and met with the TLO, Jan Willem Drexhage. He also met with RNW’s Managing Director and other senior programming and engineering executives. RNW is quite interested in the information flow that the Department provides. Currently, RNW is devising a new five year plan and is evaluating its audiences for shortwave services. RNW production and playout facilities are fully server-based, helping to put out several programme channels. RNW
supports the ABU-HFC activity and regularly provides funding assistance.
In March, Sharad met with the Chairperson of the DRM consortium (an ABU Institutional member) and her colleagues in Erlangen, Germany. Several new projects were finalised.
