ABU-HFC Shortwave Coordination Conference 2009, January, Malaysia
The ABU-HFC, our shortwave coordination group, was set up in 1996 to assist radio members to coordinate shortwave radio channels among each other. A five- day ABU-HFC Shortwave Coordination Conference for the A-09 season was held in Kuala Lumpur in January. Thirty frequency managers representing fifteen shortwave broadcasting organisations participated. A new Steering Committee was appointed.
Joint Activities with other Departments Emergency Warning Broadcasting Systems (EWBS)
The Technical Department used the opportunity at the 3rd Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction held in December 2008 in Kuala Lumpur to put forth the views of the Technical Committee. The ABU input to the conference included:
• Urging the development of EWBS systems for Asia Pacific region in close coordination with the concerned national, regional or international organisations.
• Urging national regulators to enact provisions to implement EWBS systems in the AP region and encourage manufacturers to produce receivers with the EWBS feature.
• Setting up a backpack roadshow across several vulnerable countries in the region to create the requisite awareness.
• Proposed a Ministerial Declaration on the need for the countries to jointly consider implementation of EWBS in the region in a unified manner.
• Urging stocking of inexpensive radio sets in large numbers and “Radio-in-a-Box” type transportable radio stations in disaster prone areas.
