any thanks are due to all those who’ve helped us as- semble the issue – through providing articles, pictures, interviews and anecdotes. Not al of you have been credited, but you know who you are, and it is thanks to your en- thusiasm this issue has been made possible. We hope this special edition has acted as a useful and enjoy- able roundup of Scotland’s brief, yet remarkably rich, aquacul- ture history. It is a fascinating story that is all too often over- looked. In its pages we have covered all manner of subjects, and have included the thoughts of all manner of people who have been involved in the industry over the years. We also hope it will act as a useful reminder – both to figures within the in- dustry and to those without it – of how much has been achieved by Scottish aquaculture in such a short space of time. However, while some readers might be tempted to look back with nostalgia at the early and pioneering days of the industry, or rest on the laurels of past achievements, the contents should also act as a reminder that research, innovation and improve- ment must still be our primary goals. For, despite the buoyant nature of many of our sectors at the moment, new threats will continue to emerge and, more excitingly, so will fresh opportu- nities. We must be ready to fight the former and seize the latter with both hands. Moreover, the recurring nature of many of the themes in this edition show that numerous issues have not yet been satisfac- torily dealt with – the industry cannot afford to be complacent or blasé. And we hope that, in 30-odd years from now, we can look back at another illustrious chapter in this exciting field of food production – who knows what possibilities await?
