Research into vaccines has been vital for disease control and Institute scientists have been involved in this area for many years, playing an impor- tant role in the development

of furunculosis vaccines in particular. A huge area of in- terest for the industry in recent years has been the welfare of fish, and Institute research- ers have had a major role in the formulation of European guidelines and indicators for fish welfare, showing defini- tively the importance of good water quality.

The environmental impact of aquaculture has also become increasingly important for the regulation of the industry by government agencies and Institute scientists have devel- oped powerful models that show the dispersal of wastes and effluents from farms, and help in discussions on site selection and carrying capac-

As well as research support the Institute has provided a number of commercial serv- ices to the industry in disease diagnosis, environmental monitoring, nutrition analy- sis and general consultancy. These services have ensured the Institute stays close to the industry and remains aware of current issues. In 1996 Professor Roberts
