Major changes to come out of this period included the profes- sionalisation of the Association of Scottish Shellfish Growers (ASSG), which carried out a great deal of promotional work during the early 1990s – attending food shows, producing leaflets, posters and recipe booklets, placing articles in food trade journals, and generally raising the profile of the industry. This paid off, with major retail chains taking a greater interest

in Scottish farmed shellfish, and was aided by the subsequent creation of the Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group (SSMG). The 1990s saw a rationalisation of growing techniques, a bet- ter understanding of how to consistently produce quality shell- fish, and the development of off-the-shelf culture equipment, mechanised cleaning and grading equipment, and purpose- built harvesting vessels. All these factors helped to speed up production, giving greater returns and more reinvestment. The annual production growth curves started to get steeper, although never quite as steep as forecasts predicted, and the annual production survey became eagerly studied to see if anyone had broken the 100 tonne and then the 200 tonne ceil- ing for mussels, and the 1 million shell ceiling for oysters.
