Real heroes Failing the acid test


While British and Europe- an heavy industry might have been experienc- ing the beginnings of its decline, its environmental effects were very much being taken note of – in particular the scourge of acid rain. Indeed, a Two Lakes Confer- ence, billed as ‘The First British Conference on Acid Rain’ was devoted to the threat that low pH levels were causing to fish farms and the phenomenon was billed as ‘perhaps the worst environmental threat ever to hit us’.


Speakers from around the world came to terrify their audience: Dr DR Dodge from Ontario warned that in ex-

cases lowering the pH could lead to the uptake of mercury, making them unsaleable, while more usual manifesta-


tions included ‘gro- tesque deformities of the fish.’ Delegates from Norway also told some horror stories – an area the size of Belgium had been acidified and many lakes had had their entire fish popula- tions obliterated. Given that Britain had the highest sulphur emis- sions in Western Europe this must have made a few delegates squirm in their seats. But the dam- age was not restricted to overseas. Indeed, Gra- ham Gordon, Convenor of the NFU Fish Farming Committee, lost 20,000 fish and had to close down his burn-fed hatchery in Gal- loway because the water had become too acidic.
