elcome to this special issue of Fish Farmer and the chance to take stock of an industry now entering its fourth decade as a commercial success story as it continues to grow in importance for the Scottish economy. The aim of this one-off edition is to showcase the progress made by Scottish aquaculture over the last three decades – a period during which the industry has been served continuously by Fish Farmer magazine.

Thirty years ago, UK total aquaculture production was less than 3,000 tonnes per year, now it’s around 150,000 tonnes per year – the equivalent to a 50-fold increase in a single gen- eration!


The largest single contributor towards this remarkable success story has been the salmon farming industry, which has devel- oped from a few companies experimenting with wooden cages in sheltered sites to become a highly efficient business, domi- nated by industrial-scale operations that sell the highest quality produce all over the world.

But let’s not forget the shellfish sector – now dominated by mussel aquaculture – marine finfish, trout, the feed companies servicing the industry, the equipment and services supply com- panies, the logistics companies shipping aquaculture products and the seafood processing companies that are now increas- ingly turning towards aquaculture to supply their raw materials. The number of industries providing, or reliant on, aquaculture production is now immense.


When you are involved in the aquaculture industry on a day-


to-day basis it is easy to take it all for granted. However, look- ing back over the last 30 years shows clearly what a remarkable industry it is. There is no other form of agriculture that has ex- perienced this level of sustained growth, nor one that continues to show such promise for the future.


In this issue we will be talking to some of the key figures behind the development of the Scottish aquaculture industry and it features articles on how the different aquaculture sectors have progressed, what major technological changes have been
